Using QRPspots via texting.

You can use a cell phone to spot your SOTA operation using SMS text messaging via Twitter.  Here's a step-by-step listing of how to get it up and going.  NOTE - if you can use the internet from your phone, this is not necessary.  Just log into the page and send your spots.

1) Sign up for twitter.  (CLICK HERE).   (Use your call sign for the name)

2) Enable your cell-phone for twitter.  (CLICK HERE).

3) Follow QRPSPOTS on twitter.  (CLICK HERE).

Follow QRPSPOTS (CLICK HERE).

4) IF you want to receive spots from others then:  Turn on Follow Others for QRPSPOTS.   (CLICK HERE).

5) In order to post a spot for others to see, you need to send a *direct message*  to QRPSPOTS from your cell phone.  (CLICK HERE).

NOTE:  You need to be registered into the system before it begins working.  This is a manual function done by N7UN.  If you are in a hurry, drop him an E-mail at his QRZ.COM address.  But remember, this is a hobby - he may not reply immediately.

The direct message needs to have a frequency in it.  It can have other text around the frequency. If it contains only a frequency, it will be treated as a self-spot, as long as your twitter account is your callsign. If your twitter account is your callsign then you need to put your callsign in the SMS too.

Here's an example of self-spotting via the cell phone:

SMS message to 40404:

D QRPSPOTS I'm looking for summit chasers on 14.240MHz.

Here are more self-spot SMS which would work:

D QRPSPOTS 10112

D QRPSPOTS 10118kHz CW

D QRPSPOTS 7.140 KD9KC

D QRPSPOTS 3.580 MHz from KD9KC Summit Activation

In order to spot another callsign, just add their callsign to the message:

D QRPSPOTS Just heard JA2XXX on 7.140 - cool!

D QRPSPOTS k4upg 10.120 1530utc

Since this is for SOTA.

D QRPSPOTS 14.062 SOTA W5/SC-005 - would work well.
