Understanding LTR
If the concept of trunking is completely unfamiliar to you, start here first.
Typically, the display while receiving an LTR system will read something like: 0-02-156
Interpreted, this means area bit 0, the fleet's home channel is 02, and the fleet's ID is 156.
The area bit can be either 0 or 1, and all channels in use by the trunking system will have the same area bit. If if a frequency has overlapping coverage between two LTR trunking systems (and there is a case of this in this area), one system must use 0, and the other 1.
Both the home channel and fleet ID identify the fleet. 0-02-156 and 0-01-156 would be two separate fleets.
0-02-156 will home on the trunking system's channel 02, with the speaker silent until a radio on fleet 0-02-156 begins transmitting. If channel 02 is being used by another fleet, and a user on fleet 0-02-156 begins transmitting, the system will automatically (transparent to the users) send the fleet to one of the other channels.
Each LTR system has a unique table, which assigns a frequency to a channel number. Channel numbers are from 1-20, allowing an LTR system a maximum of 20 channels. The table is programmed into the system, and into each subscriber unit. Changing the table would require reprogramming every single radio on the system.
