Rio Tinto, aka. Kennecott Utah Copper

Information needed! As they note on their webpage, servicing radios at Kennecott was how UCS Wireless got started in business. I've heard a rumor that McIntosh now has the contract. If anyone can confirm whether or not this is true, or could provide any details on what happened, please email me.

In the past, most of Kennecott's communications were on 800 MHz conventional channels. Unfortunately I did not make note of the specific frequencies at the time, but I do recall that they all used a PL of 114.8. It now appears that Nextel has purchased these channels.

Currently I am detecting three Motorola trunked systems on 900 MHz frequencies licensed to Kennecott.

The YI class licenses (900 MHz, Trunked, Other Indust/Land Transp.) held by Kennecott are:
WPDT203 - Curry Peak
WPLG245 - Curry Peak
KNNR209 - Smelter
WPLP802 - C Peak
WPLG244 - C Peak
WPMZ292 - South Pit
(See the FCC database)

Results of monitoring these system with trunker.exe v 3.8.3. For programming a trunktracker, all you need is the frequencies and talk groups, highlighted in red. Complicated fleet maps are only for older, Type I, systems, they do not apply to this system. Note: some older trunkreackers will not track 900 MHz systems

System 5219

Based upon signal strengths and license info, I believe this system is located at a hill west of Magna, with a large white C on it (for Cypress High School), referred to as "the C Peak". Lat/lon coordinates 40 42 29.8 N, 112 08 02.8 W.

System 7031

This system is located at the smelter on SR201, and has very limited range. It cannot be heard from the Salt Lake Valley, because mountains block the signal. Lat/lon coordinates 40 43 05.8 N, 112 12 07.8 W.
