Skip the soapbox, jump down to the list.

You will not often hear my callsign, KD7RTO, on any of the local repeaters. When I tune around the VHF and UHF ham bands, I simply do not hear any QSO's that I would care to join. I find them only slightly more interesting than opening up the squelch and listening to the noise.

Interest in Amateur Radio continues to decline. It is a hobby which is dying. To deal with the problem, Ham organizations have pushed through increases in privileges and decreases in the requirements to obtain a license. These measures have all been failures. They have not resulted in a significant increase in new licensees, or an increase in the number of signals on the air.

Many say that politics and religion should be avoided in Amateur Radio. They want to keep everything on the air non-controversial and non-contentious. I say that this kind of thinking will only serve to keep this hobby on the road to having all our spectrum reassigned.

Talk successfully reinvigorated AM Broadcast Radio. I feel that the demise of Amateur Radio can be prevented in a similar way. We have capabilities for real time round table discussions which neither the internet nor talk radio have. Therefore we need to be fostering such conversations, not discouraging them.

As for myself, finding a repeater where Conservatives and Liberals regularly gather to shout at each other would draw me back into active participation on VHF/UHF faster than anything else.

Frequency Lists

Utah VHF Society

The Utah VHF Society is the frequency coordinator for the state. Theirs are the "official" lists.

Murray, 30 September 2005
Bountiful, 30 April 2006

At both locations, the antenna used was a Cushcraft AR270B 5.5/7.5 dB Dual Band Ringo, mounted just over the roofline. I do not have transmit capabilities on 50, 220, and 1240 MHz, so what is reported in those bands are the results of monitoring only.
