KD7QPY (John)
Station Gear

Welcome to the website of Amateur Radio Station KD7QPY!

Hi, I'm John.  Pleased to meet you.

After decades of being too busy or otherwise distracted I finally got my General license on April 3, 2002.  However, I have been a member of the ARRL since 1997. Prior to that I had a 4-year tour of duty with the U.S. Army as a Forward Observer (13F) for 105mm and 155mm Artillery. We used FM radios for our communication, phone and data modes. Talk about Field Day!

My usual job is a Senior Applications Developer, versed in multivalued databases and server-side Java.

See you on the air!  73

What's New?

Update 5 2002-12-22

Finally, the MFJ-1904 ground mount with Hy-Gain AV-18VS 80m-10m vertical arrived and is set up in the back yard. I've been up and down the bands and I'm hearing quite well. All that's left is to tune it up and make some QSOs! The G5RV sounded fine, but because I do not have the space to stretch out the wires it's simply not suitable for transmitting with.

Update 4 2002-12-08

More station construction. The G5RV is up in the back yard. I ran RG-8X around the house (100') so with any luck the wire will be a good receive system. It's about as high up as I can get it--top of our tallest tree.

I ordered a Hy-Gain ground mounted vertical, so this wire is only temporary.

Update 3 2002-05-04

Practice, practice, practice!  There is a Yahoo! Group called "QRS-CQ" for newcomers to CW.  They are an informal group of Hams that get together for QSOs at slower speeds.  It's a new group which is still working out the meeting frequencies and times.  Visit the group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/QRS-CW/.

Station Construction - Update 2 2002-04-28

All the gear's in place!  Still working on the correct station grounding and putting up the outdoor antenna.  Slow and steady progress.
