Hundreds of boy scouts learned how to send their name in CW on Saturday May 8th at the Big Red Extreme Experience Scout Show. The Circle Ten Council of the Boy Scouts of America invited the DARC to host a booth to promote amateur radio. The annual scout show averages an attendance of 20,000 people each year. Hundreds of boy scout troops in the area hosted booths with a variety of activities ranging from pinewood derby car racing to life saving techniques. Community participation included many other non-profit organizations including animal shelters and law enforcement agencies.

The DARC booth, hosted by the Youth Activities Committee, consisted of a VHF station, HF station and half a dozen CW oscillators. Boy scouts and girl scouts were eager to learn how to use the straight key and paddles. Many scouts brought their parents back to demonstrate their new skill. The scouts were delighted to take home flyers with the letters and numbers in code along with ham radio websites to explore.

Many thanks to the volunteers who made this event successful: Susan Klingler KD5YGX, Scott Klingler KD5VWR, Joe Isabella N3JI, Chris Rutledge KT5RL, Colin Buckup N5GG, Nicole Buckup, Bill Dickerson K5ZZP, Alex Sinchukov N2YKS, & Alan Carano KD5GTT.  (See Pictures and Mug Shots for photos from the event.)
