Are You Prepared?
Federal and state emergency officials are encouraging Arkansas residents to prepare now for a possible earthquake.
The United States Geological Survey considers Arkansas among the states with a "high earthquake risk" because of activity in the New Madrid fault zone.
FEMA and the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management recommended that Arkansans prepare. The agencies advised residents to identify indoor and outdoor safe places to use if there is an earthquake, to have disaster supplies on hand, and to develop an emergency communications plan.
The BARC would like to recommend that you browse this FEMA page: http://www.fema.gov/areyouready/
National Incident Management System (NIMS) Courses
FEMA Independent Study Program:
Minimal FEMA training includes IS-100, IS-200 and IS-700. Amateur radio operators who wish to be active in ARES and/or RACES should complete the IS-700 (NIMS) course immediately. Several BARC members have completed this course. Other FEMA courses may be recommended based on your expected role in the emergency management organization. These courses are in addition to the ARECC courses. You can also find information about NIMS at http://www.fema.gov/nims/.
A good way to get general training is to enroll in the next Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class. Then, take the Red Cross training, and the ARRL and FEMA Independent Study online courses, one at a time.
