Solon Moncrief, Jr.
Col. Moncrief, 99, of Charlotte, NC, formerly of Monroe, NC, died on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at The Carriage Club Retirement Community of Charlotte, NC where he had lived for 16 years. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Monroe, NC. Ministers participating will be Rev. Gene Derryberry, Rev. Sara Spahr Stubbs, Rev. Paul Simms, and Dr. Roger Lakatos. Visitation will be in the parlor at 1:30 p.m. and the service is at 3:00 p.m. Entombment will follow at Lakeland Memorial Park Mausoleum in Monroe with full military honors.
Born June 7, 1912 in Manchester, GA to the late James Solon Moncrief and Vie Berta Snow Moncrief, he spent his youth in Glennville, East Point, and Albany, GA where he graduated from High School in 1928. Graduating from the University of Georgia in 1933, Jim received his Reserve Commission in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. His first military duty was with the Civilian Conservation Corps, followed by a year of active duty in the Army under the Thompson Act in 1936, serving in the 22nd Infantry of the Fourth Infantry Division at Fort McClellan, AL.
After two and a half years with the Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, Jim was ordered to active duty with the Second Armored Division at Ft. Benning, GA in February 1941. His war service was with the Sixth Armored Division in Europe with Gen. Patton's Third Army. Jim was the Personnel Officer (G-1) on the General Staff of the Commanding General of the Division throughout World War II. Following the war, Jim received his commission in the regular Army, a career which included many interesting assignments, including two tours of duty in the Pentagon; Staff Negotiator with the Communists at Panmumjom in the implementation of the Armistice Agreement at the conclusion of the Korean War; Military Attache to Nicaragua during the Somoza Regime; and Professor of Military Science in the ROTC program at two state universities (WV and WI).
His military decorations include: Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, The Bronze Star, Army Commendation Ribbon, French Legion of Honour, French Croix Guerre with Palm, United Nations Meritorious Service Award and the European Theater of Operations (ETO) Ribbon with five battle (bronze) stars.
After retiring from the Army, Moncrief came to Monroe, NC in 1966 as the Executive Officer of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce. Later he worked for the American Bank and Trust Company until his retirement in 1977.
Moncrief was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Monroe Rotary Club, serving as its President in 1976. Having played a key role in the organization of the Sixth Armored Division Association in 1947, he became its President in 1997. He was organizer and first President of the Union County Amateur Radio Society (UCARS). He served on the board of the Union Memorial Hospital, now CMC Union Hospital.
He authored three books, each concerning his experiences, observations, events, and people he encountered over eight decades.
Jim enjoyed 65 years of marriage with his lovely and devoted wife Geraldine ('Jerry') Meaders Moncrief. After living in Monroe for 30 years, they moved to the Carriage Club of Charlotte in 1995. Jerry died in 2006.
Survivors include his daughters Anne Moncrief (Baucom) Moore; Gene Moncrief and her husband Walter Levy and his sons, Alexander and Matthew; four grandchildren: David S. Baucom of Charlotte, Mariel Baucom Wooten and her husband Dan of Monroe, Katherine Roos and her husband Tony of Minneapolis, MN, and Kristina Stark and her husband Matt of Providence, RI; ten great grandchildren: Jake, Wil, Ben, Jon, Jed and Gray Wooten; Emma, Lily and George Stark, and Iris Roos.

I am saddened to announce that KL7IWF Larry Volker of Conover, NC in Catawba County was killed in a traffic accident. Lawrence better known as "Larry" is the brother of KB7WGB John Volker of Beulaville, NC in Duplin County. I have spoken with Larry several times in the past on 3.895 Mhz LSB and always enjoyed our QSOs' very much. Larry will sorely missed in the Amateur Radio Service.

Conover man killed in head-on crash with semi-truck
KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) - The Washington State Patrol says the driver of a semi-truck lost control due to a medical issue, causing a fatal crash Wednesday on Interstate 82 near Kennewick.  The Tri-City Herald reports the truck crossed the median and collided with an oncoming car.
The car driver, 60-year-old Lawrence Volker of Conover, N.C., died at the scene. His passenger, 59-year-old Brenda Volker of Conover, was flown to a hospital in Kennewick.

GASTONIA - Kenneth "Ken" Lucas Sr., 73, passed away July 6, 2011, at his home.

He was born Feb. 7, 1938, in Gaston County, son of the late Rudolph Lucas and Hallie Goodwin Lucas Layle.

Mr. Lucas was an avid Ham Radio Operator and country & western musician.

I'm Marty's wife Carol.
I just wanted to come here and let every one know Marty passed away 7/23/2011 at 1:25AM.

Marty was a good man who had a heart of Gold.
He loved the Lord and loved telling people about the Lord,
to where they did not want to run away but listen.
I know of a LOT of seeds he planted before he left, I will enjoy watching each one grow.

Thank you all for your prayers, Love, and support ,
through this long road Marty had to travel.
He's at home now and no more pain. He will surly be missed for a long time.

Jack Miller DENTON Mr. Johnson W. (Jack) Miller, II of Piedmont School Rd., died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011 at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro. A funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 6 at Lineberry United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Kelly Creekmur. Burial followed in the Church Cemetery. The family visited with friends Saturday the church. Mr. Miller was born in Stanly County on Aug. 21, 1949 to Johnson Wilson Miller and Callie Watts Miller. He was a graduate of UNC Charlotte and had worked as a Sanitation Inspector with both the Cabarrus and Davidson County Health Departments. He had also worked as an assistant golf pro in Lexington. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and was a member of the VFW and the DAV. He was a Ham Radio Operator and was a member of the Carolina Clowns where he used the name "Pokey". He is survived by his wife, Patricia Hill Miller of the home; a sister, Linda Wright and her husband Ed of Woodstock, Ga.; a nephew Allen Wright; and two great nieces, Ashley and Amber. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Faye Hill Vestal, Sandi H. Hopkins and her husband, Wesley and Sue Hill and her husband, Tommy Montgomery and Hill family nieces and nephews. Just passing this along,  Area 13, has had another Ham become a silent key.  Duel Davis, KE4ZUZ father of Ronnie Davis, KE4VPN (member of ARES of Cleveland County) passed away on March 22 after a battle with cancer.  Duel was a former member of the Shelby Amateur Radio Club.

GROVER-Duel Davis, 74, of 1211 Cleveland Avenue, died March 22, 2011, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
A native of Cherokee County, he retired from Celanese Corporation after 26 years of service. MORGANTON-William Coleman Earwood, 62, of 308 Pete Brittain Road, passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at Mission Hospital in Asheville.
He was born in Cleveland County on March 1, 1948. Coleman retired after 32 years from North Carolina Department of Corrections in Morganton, and also served 40 years in law enforcement with various agencies, Boiling Springs Police Department, Polkville Police Department as Chief and the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department.
After retirement, he has worked with Western Piedmont Community College as an instructor for DOC in-service. He was also a member of Amherst Baptist Church, Morganton, Masonic Lodge, REACT of Burke County and Ham Radio Club of Morganton.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Wortman Earwood and stepmother, Marjorie Earwood.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Lynn Franklin; father, Frank Earwood and wife Peggy of Shelby; son, Craig Earwood and wife Robin of Shelby; two daughters, Kim Blanton and husband Roger of Shelby and Cynthia Earwood of Shelby; four grandchildren, Emily Blanton, Cole Blanton, Mandy Thackerson and husband, Josh, Kasey Earwood significant other Lee Heffner; two great-grandchildren, Ally Thackerson and Ella Heffner; sister, Jean Costner and husband Joe of Fallston; nephew, Donnie Costner and wife, Tammy of Fallston, and niece, Tracy Lowie and husband, James of Honea Path, S.C. and special friend Sarah.

Frank A. Halloway, Jr.
Frank, 'JR' to some, began his next journey January 15, 2011. His long-time friend and caregiver, Mary Lynn Grant, and his two loving dogs, Pepe and Bear, were by his side. He was born June 6, 1950, to the late Frank A. and Dorothy K. Halloway in Antigo, WI.
Frank is survived by his sister Ann (Art) Tong of Colorado Springs, CO, and his brother Charles (Tracy) Halloway of Las Vegas, NV, and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was VP of Technical Support at T Farlow Assoc., Inc, in Concord/Kannapolis, NC. Frank was very active with Amateur Radio and Contra Dancing.
A Memorial Service will be conducted by The Rev. Dr. Nancy Kraft at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1900 The Plaza, Charlotte, NC on January 22, 2011 at 2pm. Visitation will be after the service.

As you may already know, our good friend Jon, a longtime ham in the Charlotte area, died Friday afternoon. Jon's Memorial will be Wednesday, December 1 at 3 p.m. at New Kirk Baptist Church at 175 Museum Road in Rock Hill, SC  just up the street from his house. A gathering of friends and family will be at his house right after that.

OAKBORO - Fred Thomas Smith, 82, of Oakboro, formerly of Kannapolis, died Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Stanly Manor in Albemarle following a period of declining health. He was born Feb. 6, 1928 in Alexander County son of the late Harry Lee and Pansie Leola Ferguson Smith. He was a former member of Centerview Baptist Church in Kannapolis and attended St. Martin Lutheran Church in Albemarle. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and had retired from the Merchant Marines with 44 years of service. He had served in the Great Lakes area for 35 years. Fred was known for his electronic expertise and built and repaired computers. He was a well known longtime ham radio operator and computer user. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Judy Copeland. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral. At other times they will be at the residence. Interment will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Crowell of the Home, and a sister, Claudean Kluttz and husband, Hoy, of Kannapolis. He was preceded in death by a sister, Maylene Berryman and two brothers, James Grady Smith and Harvey Lee Smith. Whitley's Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Smith.
