Title: DEC AREA 11
Assisted Rowan ARES with their first FD from the EH Dole Red Cross, even
with antenna failures at 0700 still put 3 radios on the air after quick
construction of a 6 band fan dipole. Things went well as far as can
tell from talking with the Red Cross folks, as we were invited to return
next year.

Rowan County ARES held our demonstration / Field Day Operations at the
E.H. Dole Chapter of the American Red Cross (one of our served
agencies). NC EM Area 11 DEC Gary Lang (K4GHL) and I set up antennas
Saturday morning and were ready to go just prior to the 1400 hours
starting time.
We operated as a class F station operating two transmitters (2F). We
operated on commercial power and verified that the three generators
owned by Rowan County were operational. The Rowan Incident Command Unit
was on site and put on a very impressive display of Public Service comms
capability.
Hugh Fisher, a reporter for the Salisbury Post, came by and collected
information for a story that ran in Sunday\'s paper and after he
submitted the story he returned to further discuss ARES and expressed
some interest in becoming a HAM Radio operator. Other guests included
the Rowan County DAT Chief Alvin Patterson, Red Cross Emergency Director
Deborah Lineburger as well as ARES Western Branch Assistant Section
Emergency Coordinator Paul Robinette KD4OZI and NC ARES Assistant
Section Manager Tim Slay N4IB.
We made just over 160 contacts and 5 of those were digital messages. We
had around 25 visitors who stopped in to ask questions, watch us operate
and make contacts, including several HAM\'s who stopped by and helped
with logging contacts. Overall we feel the event was a great success.
I would like to thank everyone who came out and helped with the event.

Comments: FieldDay activity on the last weekend in June was a learning
experience for those attending. Our 1-A station operated entirely on
battery power. Service was uninterrupted. Not once did we run out of
fuel. 20 members and 12 guests including a few youngsters attended
during the event.
