7 OF 7 COUNTIES REPORTING (Revised to include Gaston County)	

I had a blast at field day this year.  It was great to see Paul and his wife along with Bill Morine. 
I did not get to travel around this year as I was very busy with the Shelby ARC field day and also
wanted to stick close for my mom who had surgery on her knee recently.   I hope all had an excellent
field day. 

Gaston County lost another amateur radio operator on 7/6/2011.  Ken Lucas, W4AOJ passed away in his
sleep.  He was well known on the local repeaters and was the Saturday night Piedmont Emergency 
Training Net NCS.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

The former EC who had expressed interest in the previous month has not answered my email from June. 
I asked where they were having field day but did not get a response.  I was going to try to visit 
with them to discuss the vacant EC position.  I have spoken with a gentleman with the Red Cross, 
who would like to see the EC position filled.  He is also putting fillers out to those he knows in
Burke County.  I am hoping to have this vacancy issue resolved before the end of the year.

We had a great field day at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds.  Visits by elected officials and emergency
management officials.  We operated 3A and had a great time.  The county commissioners are honoring all 
the amateur radio groups in Cleveland County on July 12th for their participation in Field Day.

Comments: Thursday 2 Jun Meeting FD assignments for equipment.Friday 24 Jun
transported Canopies and erected them after 1800 at the North 321 Fire
Department FD Site. Saturday 25 Jun started full set up at 1000. Site was
fully operational before 1400. We ran 2A and a 2 Mtr radio with no GOTA.
Seven members participated for the full 24 hour period with short naps in
between. 21 guests and others visited the site. One of our new members with
some help built and mounted a 40 ft tower and a three element Cush Craft
beam on a flat bed trailer. We also had two Dipole antennas for the other
radios. We also brought our club communications trailer which was air
conditioned. One radio ran digital for the whole period and the other radio
for phone contacts. I had the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of
time with the new LC Emergency Director. All and all we enjoyed the
experience. This week we will start installing six new Yaesu FT8800R dual
band radios in selected Fire Depart
 ments throught the County. We will only lack four more radios to complete
the Fire Department project.

Comments: Had to move the Mecklenburg ARES Training Net from Saturday to Sunday evening.
Set up one ARES member on the HF Winmore System and he successfully made his first contact through
the HF side of Winmore.  I hope to get more stations set up on Winmore.  The Mecklenburg ARES
Training net is still a success.  We do not have a high checkins but we have quality ARES stations
that checks in and are very interested in learning about emergency communicatins.  I am planning a 
small exercise about 1 hour long in the near future to practice passing traffic by voice and the 
next training session go over what went right and what went wrong.  Hopfully I will get some more 
stations on the Winmore system that we can also do digital.
