In addition to an amateur completing and submitting an application, it is necessary that the amateur practice the skills needed to handle all kinds of traffic and check in to the net on Tuesday or Thursday to keep up with the latest developments in the local RACES - ARES group. It is also important that we demonstrate, from time to time, our ability to operate on emergency power as well as simplex. At times we will be checking these capabilities on the nets, so as the Scouts say, Be Prepared! Our operators also demonstrate their ability through supporting the various special events such as the Hawk triathlon and the JFK Ultramarathon. RACES - ARES members are also encouraged to participate in various HF nets, special club events (any club) and of course Field Day.
A Certified Respondent should be familiar with the Emergency Notification Plan for Washington County. It is available in a PDF file here.
