What Hams Do

Maybe your the type that wants to just chat with your good buddies, like to join in on the discussion about a mutual interest, or maybe just volunteer your time when the need arises, amateur radio is first and foremost about communications.                                                      With Hams that means two way communication by radio. These radios can differ as much as us Hams. They may be a simple hand-held, or a mobile unit in your car, maybe a big home base station to “ragchew” across the world.  Regardless of what you have, we offer a whole world of things to do.                                                                                                             Here’s some of the things you can do.........

-Talking with your local friends using VHF (2m) or UHF (70cm) on a handheld (HT) and with the use of a repeater you can extend this by 50+ miles at times.

-DXing.  DX means long distance communications. And in some to some Hams more specifically “across the pond” (talking over seas). With the right equipment setup, this is possible on the HF bands (10m through 160m). We will discuss the bands later on, in more details.

-Emergency and Disasters. One thing we highly pride ourselves in, is our ability to provide emergency communications during various disasters, both natural or manmade. Many organizations within amateur radio provide us with the training to do such. These include Amateur Radio Emergency Service(ARES) and National Traffic System (NTS).

-Technical Experiments. Hams come from all sorts of walks of lives. Some are electricians, others doctors, some elementary students, others average joes. What draws them is the ability to build things as simple or complex as they like. This may be a simple 2m antenna, to a radio itself, or a interface to connect there computer to their “rig”(radio).

-Contests. The sport of Ham radio. Contests can consist of trying to locate a transmitter hidden in the woods (fox hunt), to trying to make as many contacts as possible in a certain time frame. And some of these give out great awards, to boot.  Almost every weekend you can find some kind of contest.

-Digital. Plug your computer into your radio and your good to go. Some of these digital modes can be more effective in marginal transmission conditions and some even sport error free transmission. Use your favorite ham radio program and you can send things like photos, video, and even email over the airwaves.

-The World Wide Web. We even use the internet to communicate. Many repeaters around the world are connected to the internet via a computer. This gives you the ability to talk to someone in Australia, while your in Minnesota without the use of an HF transceiver. Not to mention they also have software available that will transform your PC into a ham radio.

-E.T. Phone Home Remember that scene from that hit movie? Well with ham radio that’s possible. We have our own satellites, where you can bounce signals off of to communicate around the world. Not to mention aboard the International Space Station, they have ham radio equipment, and frequently talk to us here on earth.
