ARRL Field Day

Mark your calendar for the fourth weekend in June! It will soon be time for the annual ARRL Field Day. The new location for the KCARC's Field Day activities is the Hamby VFD Fire Station (Click for map) at 4408 Highway 351 - Go East on Ambler Avenue, 5 miles past the Wal-Mart Supercenter, to the Northeast corner of Hwy 351 and Elmdale Road North (CR-520).

Field Day is always the fourth full weekend of June, beginning at 1800 UTC Saturday and ending at 1800 UTC Sunday. Field Day 2008 will be held June 28-29, 2008. Field Day 2008 Rules

Randy Robinson - N5JZH, Steve Roberts - KG5QH, Bill Shaw - KJ5DX, and Kendall Thomas - KC5FFQ, will be coordinating the preparations and equipment setup.

The May meeting was held at 7 pm, Monday May 12th. at Chavez South Park Recreation Center, 1002 Cherry Street. Field Day 2008 was discussed and sign up sheets are available to help with setup, station operation and cleanup.

Steam-N-Wheels Bike Race

Amateur Radio Operators assisted with the 16th. annual Steam-N-Wheels Bike Race & Fun Ride on Saturday, March 15, 2008. The starting line was at the east side of Nelson Park and preparations began around 9 am. The bike race started at 10 am and concluded by 2:30 pm. Contact Randy Robinson, N5JZH -or- Bill Shaw, KJ5DX. Susan Gerred with the City of Abilene Recreation Division will had more information available at the March KCARC meeting. Thanks to all who helped out!

Skywarn Meeting

Amateur Radio Operators are needed to assist with Abilene/Taylor County Skywarn. There was a follow-up meeting at 7 pm on Saturday March 1, 2008 in the EOC Conference Room, located in the basement of City Hall, 555 Walnut Street. Everyone who has attended a Skywarn training session, and wishes to be a Skywarn Spotter this year, should plan to attend this meeting. We will meet in the east parking lot of City Hall and enter the EOC as a group. Contact Bill Shaw, KJ5DX, for more information.

2008 Skywarn Training

The 2008 Skywarn Training Session was held on Saturday February 23, 2008 in the Hart Auditorium of the ACU Biblical Studies Building (entrance is directly east of the Campus Center where we have met for the past 10 years). A Bellingham, Washington amateur radio operator has been fined $7000 for failure to properly identify his radio transmissions and conducting one-way transmissions in violation of FCC rules. Full story from ARRL Web

The January meeting was held at 7 pm, Monday January 14th. at Chavez South Park Recreation Center, 1002 Cherry Street. Selection of 2008 KCARC committee members and preliminary plans for Field Day and other club events was discussed.

KCARC Christmas Dinner

The KCARC Christmas Dinner was held 6:30-9:00 pm, Saturday December 1st. at Harlow's Smokehouse, in the Chuck Yeager Room, 2002 North Clack (west side of Ambler and Winters Freeway). Call Peg at 325-672-8889 to make reservations before noon November 26th. Order from the menu, or go through the buffet line. Each member is responsible for the cost of their food.
Everyone had a good time meeting club members and socializing before the holidays. Entertainment by WB5FBJ.

The November meeting was held at 7 pm, Monday November 12th. at Chavez South Park Recreation Center, 1002 Cherry Street. Election of 2008 KCARC officers was the main order of business for this meeting.

October Club Picnic

The KCARC Discover Ham Radio picnic was held Saturday October 13th. at Cal Young Park Picnic Area, ES 11th. & T&P Lane. Bring a dish, drinks and/or chips to share and something to grill. Barbecue grills and desserts will be provided.


9-10 October 2007

Regional Communications Drill

The West Central Texas Council of Governments, in association with area public safety agencies, volunteers and amateur radio operators, conducted a communications interoperability exercise on Tuesday October 9th. and Wednesday the 10th. Monitor the 146.76, and other area repeaters, for instructions and requests for participation.

John G. Pilgrim, K5ZY - SK

John Glenn Pilgrim, 85, of Abilene died August 16, 2007. Funeral Services were held on Saturday, August 18, 2007 at the First Christian Church with Dr. Tom Lyda officiating. Burial followed at Elmwood Memorial Park. John had been a member of the KCARC for many years.
