My Companions

Many seasons in the past the Great Spirit brought forth all beings that He put on the earth. The many legged, the four legged, and the two legged beings all lived together and for a long time they lived in harmony. Great and small were told to sit themselves down before the Great Spirit then the Great Spirit revealed His plan to them all.

He began by telling them of a time before the enlightenment of of the two legged men when all of His creatures were living in harmony and peace. When all life was considered sacred by all other life.

He told them that the time had come that He must separate the two legged human beings from the rest of His creation because they had become proud and haughty. How this pride had poisened their spirit and how their pride had driven a great wedge between Himself and all the humans.

Now He told all seated before Him that He must place a great and mighty chasms between all human kind and the other beings he had created. He told the other beings that the humans would come to rule them and kill them unmercifully if things remained the way they were. He told them that if He did not for a time separate them from the humans they all would be murdered and slain for sport and food.

The Great Spirit lifted His arms into the sky, then brought them down pointing His arms in opposite directions. Then He said in a loud voice to the humans that they were to all move to His right side and stand there for a time. Then He said in a louder voice so all of the rest of the beings could hear that they should move to His left side.

When all of the creatures were separated and stood there watching the Great Spirit as He brought His hands together with a clap that shook Mother Earth to her core. The sound was so deafening that all who heard it knew something else would happen.

As all of the creatures of the Earth watched Mother Earth split open right down between the two groups of creatures, humans apart from all the other creatures of the Earth. At first just a small crack formed and slowly widened. The crack soon became a valley and still it did not stop. Soon the valley widened into a canyon and kept widening.

Back among the mass of non-human creatures the man dog looked at the woman dog and said "I will miss those brothers I have hunted with." The she dog also said to him "Yes I too will miss my place beside the fire." The he dog looked back at the widening chasm and then back at the she dog. They both knew without saying a word what they must do.

Without blinking an eye or looking back at each other they both at the same instant broke through the mass of beings on their side of the chasm. They began running as fast as they could bounding over groups of many legged beings jumping over larger groups of four legged friends. Lightly touching the earth they sprang higher and faster. As the chasm widened almost to the point where no one could jump it they both reached the edge.

The he dog and the she dog were moving so fast that when they reached the small piece of earth at the edge of the chasm they couldn't have stopped if they had wanted to. They both knew that if they didn't make the other side they would die in the bottom of the chasm far down below.

Both of them reached the edge at the exact same moment and jumped with every bit of strength they could gather from deep within themselves. They flew it seemed as if they were birds and the edge of the chasm gave way and tumbled far down into the pit making a loud rumbling for a time.

When they reached the other side they slowly walked over to the side of the Man leader of all the humans and sat down. Panting they sat there and looked at the Great Spirit and then they both looked up at the Man leader then lay down in the dirt on both sides of him.

The Great Spirit spoke to the man dog and the woman dog saying, "You choose to stay with the humans?" Both the man and woman dog sat up and nodded that they did. Then the Great Spirit told them "So be it, forever."

And to this day the dog and the man have lived together. The Man standing and the dog sitting by his side.

Dog Stuff

I now have a 10 year old mixed breed, golden retriever and collie, his name is Ceaser. He currently is having quite a bit of stomach trouble. This came on a bit suddenly last month. I hope it clears up soon and permanently (but I'm told that it probably won't clear up permanently). He is very intelligent and obedient. Previously to him my first dog was a sweet little beagle mixed. Her name was Buttons and she was 15 when she was put down (I hate "put to sleep" and I've had to "do it" five times and each time I feel terribly guilty about it).

Cat Stuff

I had two cats for some time along with my first dog . The first of these two cats was Kalie she was about 15 the second was Bows he is now about 11.

May of 1996 my first cat a brown and black female cat, Kalie, because she was almost a Calico, suffered from renal failure. A trip to the emergency vet's office told me that fact. They suggested the inevitable. While there I saw a pretty silver/gray/black with a little bit of white kitten roaming around. After my oldest was gone I asked who's that was, pointing to the silver gray kitten. The attendant said someone tied it to the door a few days earlier. I told them that in a few days after mourning I'd be back for her. That gave me two cats again.

The following August one evening I heard this meowing and it was a distressful meow and a young meow. I thought the neighbors had gotten a kitten and was keeping it outside. The next day I found four babies huddled into an outside corner of the house. The one meowing had fallen in a basement window well and couldn't get back to her litter mates. I removed her and put her back with her siblings.

When I got home there was no sign they had been attended to, I didn't know what to do. They wern't weaned and huddled in a ball to keep warm. I waited one more day until the weekend came because I knew if I touched them I would take them in. Then I took them in.

The biggest one Elwood weighed 5.5 oz. There were two boys, both tuxedo's and two girls both Calico's. The following months had me getting up at 4AM to get them fed and eliminated before having to go to work. Then a feeding as soon as I got home from work. Then another feeding at midnight before bed.

The two boys named Jake and Elwood the two girls named Bunny and Gidget. The stray I got from the emergency vet is named Penny. So now I had six cats and a dog.

Others companions I have had are a female cat named Chessie, a female cat named Domino.

Buttons died 1-9-1989, she was 15.
Chessie died 4-30-1989, she was 3
Domino died 12-2-1994, she was 4.
Kallie died 6-6-1996, she was 16.
Today (6-8-97) my beloved Bows died, he was 11 years old and a wonderful companion. He was a very large (16 lbs at his peak) lap cat. He kept me warm so many cold days. I wonder how I'll keep warm now that he's gone. I suppose one of the others will take his place on my lap. But never in my heart! We will miss you Bows!
