The Emergency Comunications Repeater

The Federal Way Amateur Radio Club supports emergency communications for various organizations in the Greater Federal Way area. This repeater will help us accomplish this mission by allowing field teams and EOC's to communicate with each other using low powered hand held radios.

The main focus of this system from the outset has been reliability and redundency. The following pages will describe where we are and where we are going. When you look at the design keep the purpose of this system in mind.

At this time there is really two parallel projects going on. The system installed at Weyerhaeuser and the system we will be installing at the King County facility.

The Frequency

The Clallam County Amateur radio club has agreed to share the 146.76/146.16 pair of frequencies with the Federal Way Amateur Radio club for the establishment of a low level repeater. We are very gratefull for their cooperation and support. We would like to reduce as far as possible the odds of our users interfering with their system. Since their system doesn't use a tone to restrict access we will be requiring our users to use minimum power to access the repeater and to only access it from the Greater Federal Way area. If you need long distance use 147.04 or one of the many other repeaters in the area. No repeater DXing.

The WWARA ( Western Washington Amateur Relay Assoc. ) has authorized a 60 day test period to test co-channel use of the frequency prior to granting official coordination of the frequency.

The Weyerhaeuser Site

This site went on the air November 1st. This site allowed us to be operational for Y2K.  This is a temporay site until we can relocate to the County facility.  The site is located on the roof of the Weyerhaeuser Technology Center. Early testing from this low level site has shown it to have resonable coverage of central  Federal Way. Thank you Weyerhaeuser for providing this location for our repeater.

The King County Site

King County has given us permission to locate a repeater at their Federal Way 800 MHz site.  This brand new communications facility will give us a first class location for our equipment. We will be located at the 230 foot level. The duplexer, isolator, and antenna have arrived. This equipment was made possible through our partners in Emergency Management the City of Federal Way and Lakehaven Utility District.  Thank you City of Federal Way and Lakehaven Utility District.
