Interference Log

ICOM IC-2100 2-Meter Xcvr This is a record of Interference heard on the K4TQU repeater during recent months. Some of the interference has been recorded and transcribed. The audio WAV files were converted to MP3s. Click on the link to listen to the audio. A couple of the files are large and will take a while to download. Be patient. Note that the distortion and echo in these MP3s is an artifact of the over-compression used to make the files as small as possible. The original audio data is very readable. Refer to the Brevard Area Map as you read this log.

If you hear something, please Email us the Date & Time and what you heard. Every scrap of information could help. Be specific, include the names or handles you hear. Also, include the names of landmarks or places you hear spoken about. This list will be updated as your reports are submitted. TNX 73.

UPDATE: (15 OCT 2003) - Well, activity has decreased dramatically during September and October. It seems to be related to weather conditions between Athens and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Only sporadic voices have been heard. (Yes, I continue to hear Paul calling for "Catman" some afternoons between 4PM and 6PM. And, I've heard occasional short QSOs about tracking, on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, so they continue to have weekend dog hunts.) The scratchy intermod continues from their weak signals. So, they don't appear to have vacated the frequency. - KC4GZX

I was talking to K4PI about the area where I live. It is called "Point Peter."
An unidentified station broke in and said "I know where Point Peter is."
After comfirming with K4PI that Point Peter is where I live, I asked the other station to go ahead.
The othe station replied "I have your peter point right here."
We did not hear any more interference or ID after that.

(Guy Lee) Are you gettin' any better, Wayne?
(Guy Lee) Yeah.
(Guy Lee) I said, Are you gettin' any better?
You got down to the creek?
Well, you'll have to cross that creek. Go over on the other side.
Well, They're not too fur. Uh, I believe they're right on the lower end.
Of Coldes Ridge over there. That's where they sounds like they're at.
Kinda up, maybe up in the mouth of that cove that goes up to Devil's Courthouse Rock.
Well, hell, much as it's been raining, guess it's a pretty good sized little creek now.
Yeah.
(???) ... the dog up high. And I tracked, I believe that might be Quick up high.
(Guy Lee) I don't know. It sounds to me like they're all together over yonder. I don't know.
Yeah?
(Paul) ... headed toward the tunnel, cause that old bitch is fixin' to cross out there.
(Guy Lee) Hell, I'm hearin' her, Paul, right down yonder with the rest of'um.
Well, Lanny said you ought to be getting close. You're headed in the right direction.
Yeah.
(Dennis) Hey, Guy Lee?
(Guy Lee) Yeah?
(Dennis) They're right around here above Chesnut Ridge parking lot.
(Guy Lee) Alright. Wayne, have you got to the creek yet?
Well, you might as well head right down that creek.
Somebody'll come down there and pick you up at the end of the road, in a few minutes.
Yeah, they're plum around there on Chestnut Ridge, now.
You'll probably hit his track down through there somewhere.
Where they crossed. You could turn'um right there.
(Dennis) If you get on, if you get on up here you can hear it.
There comin' right around, right around uh, the hill over here.
Fixin' to come right under the parkin' lot out here.
(Guy Lee) Well, pack on 'um by God.
(Guy Lee) Yeah. All right. Are they close enough to pack, Dennis?
(Dennis) No, they're comin' around right on top. They may go up over the tunnel.
They get around here close enough, I'll do it.
(Guy Lee) They get up high enough there, they cross top the tunnel, Dennis.
(Dennis) I believe they're going to come on around.
(Guy Lee) You reckon they won't go to 'um from here, Dennis?
(Dennis) They would I guess. But if they'd come round here right under Chestnut Ridge,
I could hep'um right up that trail.
They're right over there 'bout where them dogs was up that balsam there.
That's where they're at.
(Guy Lee) Yeah. I believe if you'd just pull out here at he end of the damn tunnel
turn round side that hill they'd go to it.
They ain't but two dogs are they? Quick and Cash I think.
(Dennis) Can you hear'um good from right there?
(Guy Lee) Hell fire yeah. There just right there.
(Dennis) All right. You can't hear 'um out here Guy Lee. They still a barkin?
(Guy Lee) They're rasin' hell, Dennis.
(Dennis) Reckon I ought'a wait a minute, see if they'll come on around?
(Guy Lee) Yeah. They's a fixed one. Yeah, there should be trail goes down the creek there.
When you get on the main creek. I believe it's on the right hand side most of the way down through there.
There's a place or two it crosses on the left side, but most of it's on the right side goin' down
It's pretty close to the creek. It don't. You may be too high up the creek to hit the trail.
That trail it turns down from up here at the Courthouse.
And, uh, turns down Courthouse Creek and it don't get on that creek where your at
till middle ways down on it.
If you on the creek and if it ain't too rough. Just head down the creek. You'll cross that trail.
Yeah, you should come out right there at the end of the road there.
At the head of the river. You know.
(Terry) Hey, Wayne? Quit whinin' and get in there.
This is Ol' Terry, Wayne. Up here on talkin' to these fellers, Super Dave I guess.
Yeah, right. Naw, he's 10-7, I'd say. Yeah, 10-4.
Naw, we got a late start. We're goin' round the other way there.
We can barely hear 'um from up here. We're going to ease off there, Wayne.
Talk to you later.
(Paul) Go ahead.
(Guy Lee) You'd ...
... (garbled) ...
(Dennis) Them dogs on top of Chestnut Ridge, Paul. Pretty far down in there.
(Guy Lee) Go ahead. There still on it. Right here on Chestnut Ridge.
(Guy Lee) You'se out yet? Well jump in the damned thing.

(I missed about 60 seconds here while switching tapes.
- Paul spoke about a short, toothless indian woman who walked up and
- told him about a dog down the parkway where she was picking berries.)

(Paul) About 4 and a half feet, 5 feet tall maybe.
Head about as big as your damn arm. I mean a steering wheel.
And she went that'a way, and I can't get my boy back out here. You reckon, she just had one leg.
Well she couldn't talk too plain.
And she said she was going to hunt, blueberry pickin'.
You reckon he was found around there?
Guywire?
I guran-damn-tee I'm going to run down there and see.
... (garbled) ...
(Paul) Dennis?
That 447 is the closest dog we got. He's down there on Headwater Road. Where you at?
You go on 'round there Cove Creek Road. You'll get that dog I believe.

(Paul) I've heard it called everything, but now I've heard it called "eatn' blueberries".
... (garbled) ...
(Paul) Dennis, there ain't no use in me comin' back down that away. I'll just drive back out the parkway.
If you're going back around the Headwater Road and back 'round there.
I'll just go on home and sleep awhile, then get back out and help'em.
Hunt them deer runnin' things up.
(Guy Lee) ...
(Paul) Well, I .. right on top of .. Ridge awhile ago.
(Guy Lee) ...
(Paul) It was goood.
(Guy Lee) Well if you want ...
(Paul) Yeah, you been in the ol'blueberry patch with that ol'indian ...
(Guy Lee) ... (garbled) ...
(Paul) Alright.
(Paul) You goin' on around the headwater road, Dennis?
KF4IRN IDs
(Guy Lee) I'd said you're goin' on round the Headwater Road, right?
(Guy Lee) Dave? Well, uh, you goin' on around .. ain't cha?
(Guy Lee) Well, I'm goin'a head down the damn road to the house.
(Guy Lee) Do What?
(Guy Lee) I ain't a staying up here. I'm going to the house.
(Guy Lee) He's a gettin' him now, if he can turn ol'John loose.
... (garbled) ...
(Guy Lee) You got what now?
(Paul) ... (garbled) ... Which way's she runnin' ... No she's ... 134 in there ...
... (garbled) ...
(Guy Lee) Dennis?
... (garbled) ...
(Guy Lee) Holy ... If you'd take your God damn thumb off the mic we'd talk to you. ...
(Paul) ... one more time.
(Guy Lee) Go ahead, Junior. Well, he keeps his God damn thumb on the mic all the time.
He'll talk then not take his thumb off of it. ... Well, spit on it.
... (garbled) ...
(Paul) Dave, you haven't been hitting on my dogs have you? Alright, that's good for'em. One times alright.
(???) Drew? Where'd they come out at?
(Paul) Will you track one for me there? 273.
Are you settin' at the pole on Pilot, or you settin' at the upper pole?
The upper blockade. OK. Alright, you could get it there this morning, couldn't you?
What about Gilbert? 448? I mean 458? 558 or 658.
Who's got a 463?
Is that where you're at, I mean you got him over there?
OK. They're down toward the Fish Hatchery? They're way down in there. Seemin' like to me.
(???) Is yours 465, Drew? ...beep beep beep... Drew, you say yours is 465?

(Guy Lee) You goto the God damned house and tell your old lady to make us a pot of coffee.
... (garbled) ...
(Guy Lee) Well, I'd run her ass off then. Get me one that had a coffee pot.
... (garbled) ...
(Guy Lee) I'm going to go up here to Johns Cove. See if I can get a ... them dogs.
I thought said the left hand side of Looking Glass. ... 775's tracking on the left hand side ...
Just pull off there I'll be back in a minute. ...
... (garbled) ...
(???) Well, I thought I got that 851 back up this way while ago.
That's the reason I was going back up there to John Rock. Try to track. I dunno.
(Guy Lee) Yeah, they'll probably come out there at Sliding Rock.
I've run 'um down through there. And they cross that creek, just above Sliding Rock there.
Right around between Sliding Rock and the Rock up there. And go right on up ...
... (garbled) ...
(???) Dave, did you find one of them there?
(Paul) ... I might be wrong they might be across that road over in there.
(Guy Lee) That 851 collar I believe. I walked out here on the Rock.
He's down in there. Getting a hell of a beep on him. He might be trying to work his way back up here. ...
That's the only thing I can pickup from here. But that 775 is down yonder at Looking Glass.
(Guy Lee) No, I can't get nothing on it.
That damn thing the other night over yonder.
We could'nt get nothing on it and ... switched over to something else and picked up, I believe.
Yeah, I pickedit up from down yonder at Cherry Cove, awhile ago.
Well, Dennis'll be on up there in just a minute. Hell, he's got a good tracker.
(Guy Lee) No, it's one of the pups. I'm going to be off here a minute. Eat breakfast.
(Paul) ...(garbled) ...
The dogs headed down this ridge over here. ...
(Paul) Guy Lee's went around yonder and went to sleep.
I'd catch that little ...(garbled)... and he's carrin' his leg.
Swole pretty good. Yeah. Well, it looked like some teeth marks on his leg.
He might have gotten in a damn ... fight. I don't know. Yeah, several times.
Guywire went to sleep. ... I'll bet you a horse that's what he's a doin'.
I'm goin' a hunt my dogs, but he's a damn blueberry pickin'.
...(garbled) ...
(Paul) Seems to me he's moved higher. He was down lower. Maybe he'll smell these dogs and come on out.
Dennis, he won't let me catch him. I get a can of ... out and try to catch him.
Did you read me?
Dennis, how bout callin' for Boss. He's right here where he can hear you. Call for him.
(Dennis) What's that?
(Paul) He looked at the radio a minute ago. Speak to 'em.
(Dennis) Yeah, but I wasn't talkin' a minute ago. Hang on.
(Paul) Shut up, Boy. Let her call him. Call him Dennis.
(Paul) Dennis, just as damn quick as you called him, he walked right up and cralwed in the damn box.
Tell that Super Dave to kiss my ass. Did you hear. I put him in the box.
When ever you started callin', here he comes. I've got him in the box.
(Paul) No, but you track that 775. Or figure where he's at. I kinda figure he's up toward the ...
... I can't even get him now.
(??) That damned ol' dog of Bobbies. He want put him on in this kinda weather will he?
(??) ... got them in the box. Guy Lee has. Or Super Dave's got them in the box.
(Paul) Dave, you would'nt thought that'd work callin' over the damn radio.
(??) I'm goin' to drive around here to the next pull off back towards Shining Rock.
I'm going to stop and see if I can get that 775 a beepin' again.
And he's got a couple more down there, ain't he.
(??) Well, I wish we'd find 'um. We'd lay down for awhile. I'm going to have to here in a little bit.
Well, there might be some more over in yonder. That tracker sometime messes up on long distance.
I coulda sworn that wern't that one down yonder at the house. But it damn sure was.
I got out yonder the other side of Black Knob Gap, and I started getting a double beep.
And I figure he's right down yonder in the cove, cause, you know that's where he's at.
And them two dogs. Junior ... Balsam Lake... or somewhere right in that area. About the Lake.
He mighta sent his ass to New York.
Well, I've got Tiger and one of my Bl... and my walker and I anin't worried bout the rest, the other two.
What about that gilbert dog? When he left he was at the tree, wasn't he ...
When he left the tree he just didn't go on. I don't know what happened.
Whether gilbert sat down and he stayed with him or he got hurt or what.
He's the one that'll get a hold of one, son. He not try to get a hold of it when he come down.
Well, that's what we want.
...(garbled)...
He will move won't he? He ate three deer off my dog this morning.
... Super Dave.
You see me, you heard me load that dog didn't you?
Boss always been a little bit shy but I've always been able to get him.
(Paul) Hey, Dennis? Dennis?
Who's got a blue dog down in there. A spekled or blue lookin' dog.
Well, he ain't had him out of the box.
A man stopped here and told me there's a blue dog down Sliding Rock. Caught it in the road down there.
He ain't had him out of the box though has he.
...(feedback)...
Looked down, he had him down in the ditch there. I beat him off of it.
That's what they said now. They're standing right here.
(??) ...
(Paul) If he had something like that blue dog he might run a little piece. ...
(??) ...
(Paul) But I said how long did he run it, son? How long did he run it?
(Paul) Bull damn shit. It's down there at the top of ... Ridge.
When we got out down there. Standing in the damn road. ... them walkers running all day.
... 753 ... Dennis?
Somebody had to pick them dogs up. Cause I can't get no beep. And I was gettin'um good.
...(feedback)...
(??) Where's he at?
(Paul) Dave, what is the collar on the blue dog.
He ... had him loose. That's why that fella ran him off that deer.
Yeah, just above the Fish Hatchery. I can't get nothin' on him.

He's got a bitch that slipped her collar.
He ain't got no name on her. I mean he ain't got no tracker on her.
He's no Keith Bonds? Dennis, I got a dog here with a bad leg.
It's yours. He's either been snake bit or bear bit, one. His right front leg. Got what now.
Oh no. Hell no. Shit no. I don't thnik so.
We'll see when we get there. But it's either a snake bite or a bear bite one.
Uh, Guy Lee did they get my walker dog? Yeah, I'm going to rip your damn deer.

(Guy Lee) They are loose, I believe Quick is by his self.
She's either by her self or way the hell in front of them one.
(???) Come in, Super Dave.
(Wayne) You track that bitch Guy Lee found?
(Wayne) I'm up here at the Log Hollar Overlook.
Lookin' right straight at the Rock. She's right straight towards that rock.
I don't think she's crossed that road down yonder yet.
Well, I've heard two or three dogs here pretty plain.
But I don't think they're doing a whole lot of nothing.
(Guy Lee) You hear'um, Wayne?
(Wayne) Every now and then.
... (garbled) ...
(Guy Lee) I believe Quicks by herself, Wayne.
(Wayne) There's two or three dogs over here with her Guy Lee.
(Guy Lee) You shore it's her?
(Wayne) 559 on my box, comin' in pretty clear. They just might not be a'barkin' much.
(Guy Lee) That things a blowing up there. ... she'll bark her ass off if it starts.
... (garbled) ...
(Guy Lee) Help! Help! Help!
... (garbled) ...
(Guy Lee) No I said, How do these things come when they ...
(???) Graveyard Parking Lot. Right below it.
... (garbled) ...
(Wayne) Yeah, I hear that bitch of yours now.
(Guy Lee) It's 852.
(Guy Lee) Yeah. Well, if you can, try to stay up with her.
Don't let her get over on that damn Lookin Glass side. Alright.
(Guy Lee) Can you hear her, Wayne?
(Wayne) Yeah, ...
(Guy Lee) Is she way down there?
(Wayne) Yeah, 10-4.
(Guy Lee) I believe I'll go on down there.
(Wayne) Yeah, she's real low in there, though.
Can't track 216 can you? Yeah.
(Guy Lee) Babs? Have you been ...
(Paul) No sir. No I hadn't. I got your bitch, yeah.
Yeah, Guy Lee, came out there and caught her. No. No. No.

HERE IS THE RAW AUDIO FILE FOR 7:00AM-8:00AM. THE PERSON I'VE ID AS (Paul) IS THE ONE WHO CALLS "Boutcha Catman."

(Guy Lee) I left the John Rock ... (garbled) ...
I'd say he's over in there somewhere.
You'se a breaking up there I didn't read you.
Yeah, he's a tracking. I guess there's a difference in the collar.
I was getting just a little better on him than I was on Smoke there a minute ago.
Yeah, they was tracking the same direction.
I moved back out here. Shooting straight up right towards the lower end of Atlantic? Ridge.
I can hear them dogs waaay down on the lower end of Fork River Ridge, yonder I believe.
Smoke, he got, he kept'a getting weaker from here now.
I believe he done crossed Fork River Ridge and done went on over there on Atlantic? Ridge.
They're low down, way down yonder, Dennis about where Fork River Ridge butts off.
They're way down there, yeah.
Go ahead, Josh.
Alright I'll do it.
Alright I'll talk to you tonight.
Yeah, Wayne.
(Wayne) Did you hear me?
(Guy Lee) Yeah I can hear'um from over here.
They come around the lower end of that old Rough Ridge to the right of where you're settin out there Wayne.
Way down there didn't they?
(Wayne) Yeah.
(Guy Lee) ... Smoke's flying.
Well now, I've uh. I'm a tracking I've ... tracking the bitch.
And I say shes the dog we're hearing down there.
But Bond, either his collar is weak or his ain't a coming in as good as hers.
(Paul) Smokes runnin' like hell down right down in there, Dennis.
(Guy Lee) I can get the 446 down in there too, Dennis.
I'm going to move on back around yonder. They done crossed that Fork River Ridge.
(Wayne) They back down the hill, Guy Lee, or something there I can't hear him now, he got weaker.
(Guy Lee) Which one's the young bitch, Dennis.
Damn, I'da figured she'd been the one to a really stuck.
A running bitch, that's what he called her.
He'll sort'um out by Sunday.
Can you still hear um, Wayne?
(Wayne) I believe they're turned back, he's on the other side that ridge, coming straight down toward creek.
(Guy Lee) You don't think they went ...
(Wayne) I don't think so. I walked up to her ... can't hear nothin' there.
He came in plain then kinda faded out, went back or something.
He's the only dog I heard.
(Guy Lee) No, we ain't hear him Dennis. We moved out the road here.
Yeah. I hear um along, but it wasn't Smoke.
(Wayne) I heard him right then Guy Lee. I believe it is Smoke I'm listening to.
That dog there is headn' this'a way ...
(Wayne) Smoke's gon'a try to come up out there ain't he Guy Lee.
(Guy Lee) Yeah, he's just right under us here, Wayne.
He ain't givin' a whole lot of mouth.
They've stopped on him right there, you hear that?
It stopped ol'Smoke here.
(Wayne) Hell, we can put ??? to him from here can't we?
Want to try to put something to him?
Guy Lee, want to ... out there and put mine in?
(Guy Lee) By God, we got the shit whipped on him now.
God damn, Quick went to him a mile over in yonder.
They come right on around the cove here, and hit Sat? Landing Ridge, yonder.
Sound like they turned down a little bit.
I'm going to run out here to the John Rock Overlook and listen just a little.
Then run to the Locust Patch.
They ain't turning your way.
(Wayne) They going round, right around toward ??? Landing Ridge.
(Guy Lee) I'm going to run on down here to the Locust Patch, Wayne.
(Wayne) OK.
Yeah.
No I haven't.
10-4.
... up there Guy Lee they're going on pretty good.
(Guy Lee) Is any of them other dogs ever caught up with Quick?
(Wayne) They're comin'.
(Guy Lee) They went ...
(Wayne) Well, they ain't too far ... they right around under here.
(Guy Lee) Well, I tell you what now. You stay right there they might walk out that trail there.
Them som'bitch ... about coming out ... cross right there at the Graveyard Parking Lot.
(Wayne) OK.
(Guy Lee) ... (garbled) ... right along here.
... (garbled) ... that rock ... stand up on it ... the whole ridge down through there.
You can tell where they're at.
(Paul) Guywire, you might ought stay up there.
They ain't never come out here. I can still hear'um over by the Locust Patch.
(Guy Lee) You read that, Wayne?
(Wayne) Yeah, I'm hearin'um.
(Guy Lee) Well, hit that damn trail out that top right there. Try to keep the som'bitch over on this side.
(Wayne) How am I ...
(Guy Lee) Well, just get in front of'um out there somewhere. Try to keep it over on this side if you can.
(Wayne) I ought be hearin'um ... Locust Patch.
(Guy Lee) Well, it's a pretty good piece around here to the Locust Patch. ... they got Long?
Top there they can come up, Wayne.
(Wayne) ... around there now.
I'd say your bitch and Smoke and them's crossed Landing Ridge.
Did'ga hear me Guywire?
(Guy Lee) Yeah, but hell if they cross it they're comin' out here.
There's a little old short ridge that runs off between here and Atlantic? Ridge.
They could be over behind it.
Well, if you want to, you can walk that trail that comes right on out there.
Come right on around there, then there'll be one cut off to the left.
Come off in this parking lot up here.
I'll pick you up. Yeah, they're coming in here now, Wayne.
(Wayne) Yeah, that's what I was thinkin'.
(Wayne) Did, you hear'um pretty good, Guy Lee?
(Guy Lee) Naw, they kinda went out hearin'.
If Quick's leading that damn pack she's pulling back toward that top up there, I believe, Wayne.
(Guy Lee) Yeah.
(Guy Lee) Yeah. Hall ass right on round that trail, Wayne. They come in and went right back out.
(Paul) Guywire? Come back down here.
