Biographical Information

Theo C. Damen has an Ir-degree in EE from the Univ. of Eindhoven, The Netherlands; and inspired by the world-class Physics environment at the Bell Telephone Laboratories, Murray Hill, N.J. he decided to change his vocation, and has acquired a Physics degree from New York University. He joined BTL in 1958 and moved to BTL Holmdel, N.J. in 1968. His work has always been of a novel nature pushing the limits of the frontiers. The highlights of his EE and Physics endeavors are tabulated below in chronological order:

1959 Automatic slicing level predictor circuit for digital signal pattern effects.

1959 Automatic impedance compensation for twisted pair phone line length.

1960 The first digital video compressor using Delta-Frame transmission system. (finally, after 34 years it has been implemented for practical applications such as JPEG and MPEG.) The first digitally variable Phase-Locked-Loop Crystal controlled Oscil.

With the advent of the laser, his pioneering work, using inelastic light scattering, provided the first experimental verification of group-theoretical predictions for light-matter interactions such as phonons, polaritons, magnons, plasmons, spin-flip, surface-phonon modes, plasmas, single particle, resonant-, anti-resonant-, electronic-, magnetic field induced Raman, and phase transitions, breakdown of selection rules, thereby contributing to the growth of a field which is still very much alive today. The crystals involved are CdS, ZnO, ZnSe, ZnS, GaAs, GaAlAs, CaCO3, TiO2, MgF2, ZnF2, FeF2, MnF2, KBr, KCl, KH2PO4, CeCl3, PrCl3.

1972 The first visible spin-flip laser (CdS).

1973 The first NdP5O14 (Nd-Ultraphosphate, crystalline 100% Nd), and Nd(x)La(1-x)P5O14 (NdLa-Pentaphosphate) Lasers.

1974 Spatial distribution and hydro-dynamic expansion of e-hole drops in Ge.

1976 Electrical and optical excitation of Landau-emission.

1977 Ultrafast optically controlled modulator for a CO2-Laser using two-photon magneto-absorption effect.

1978 Dynamic Stark-tuned FIR-lasers in Rb.

1980 The first RT optically pumped micro-cavity semiconductor laser.

1981 Developed a picosecond micro-cavity semiconductor laser tunable over a very large bandwidth, thousands of Å.

1982 The first Picosecond Upconversion Technique used to measure spontaneous and stimulated emission dynamics in semiconductor lasers.

1982 Very fast optical disk parallel array read-out system.

1983 Developed the first semiconductor laser pumped solid state laser.

1983 He discovered and pioneered in the field of quantum confined Stark effect in quantum well structures. Most of the Advanced Photonics Dept.'s efforts are based on this discovery.

Many optical communications devices are based on this electro-optical effect.

1987 He has joined The Ultra Fast Effort of femtosecond luminescence spectroscopy using sum-frequency upconversion-, and Four Wave Mixing (FWM) techniques. He has measured the fundamental properties of electron-hole, Exciton, and Exciton-Spin/Momentum formation and relaxation dynamics, resonant-, non-resonant-, phonon assisted tunneling, quantum beats, coherent polarization interactions, transient gratings, in semiconductors.

1997 He has joined The advanced Wireless Access Group and has performed propagation measurements to define propagation properties and formulate models required for the accurate simulation of Advanced Wireless Access system capacities, cell sizes, and loss budget for different environments. He has measured the concept of Incident Power Density Pattern (IPDP) to enhance system capacity simulations to account for all possible and significant sources of interference, high resolution delay spread measurements, Ray tracing in narrow beam fixed wireless systems, and modeling point to point loss calculations using topographic maps.

2000 Retired, and enjoying every bit of it..

Personal Interests:

Sports: I play 2-3 hours/day singles Tennis. I am a bogey Golfer. In my younger days I came in 3rd in the 1 km long distance swimming contest held in Noord Brabant, a province in The Netherlands.

Hobbies: I have a Masters rating in Bridge, Chess, and GO (one dan). I did get paid for playing the Keyboard (Electronic Piano) in a Night Club. Of coarse, I am a very active Amateur Radio Operator, and once in a while I create Expressionistic Oil Paintings .

Economy: I follow every day the global financial invetment stategies, characteristics, relationships, and Stock Markets.

He is using the greatest communications revolution ever (www) to its fullest extent, such as home networking, video/voice, etc. The internet drives communication amongst all countries, Info is instantaneously accessable to all peoples, conveying/discussing the social laws, regulations and folklore of all the countries, which might result in better understanding amongst the peoples of the earth. The internet, hopefuly be a stepping stone towards eternal peace.
