Mercer County, IL EN41RF

Hi, my name's Josh, and this is my story...

I have always had an interest in electronics. I guess it started with one of those 160 in 1 project kits you see at Radio Shack. Before long, I was tearing everything in sight apart, trying to "fix it."

When I was about 13, a friend of the family showed me his shack. I was hooked! Before a year had passed, my father and I had our tickets. Now, almost 4 years later, I have my code endorsement. I plan to upgrade to General soon.

Early this year, we rounded up some of the local hams, and started the County's only Amateur Radio club. The Mercer County Amateur Radio Group was founded for several reasons, mainly to increase emergency awareness and preparedness in our communities. Our goals also include promoting the hobby, and having fun. We meet every month at the Viola Village Hall. I was elected President, and my Dad Vice President. We are still looking for someone willing to fill the positions of Secretary and Treasurer.

Lately, I have been experimenting with several aspects of the hobby that I have overlooked for a few years. These include, 2 meter packet, APRS, QRP design, and ARES. I have been involved in SkyWarn for about 2 years.

I am also involved in 4H, and 4H Federation. I exhibited at the county fair this year, earning a Blue Award in my project, Outdoor Meals III. This project was selected for state. I was also awarded first place for exhibiting Dianthus, and second place for Misc. Youth Flowers. The Outdoor Meals III display did very well at state, receiving a Superior rating (the highest for that project). Email kb9wgx@qsl.net
