QIN Net Manager's Comments for May 2003

The sun sent out many flares this month and continued to make conditions extremely rough for the morning nets. In spite all of that, during the month of May, the morning QIN net kept it's schedule. Also, a few nights of auroral activity were experienced during the evening/nighttime hours.

There were 17 different stations QNI in the month of May, and 108 pieces of traffic passed, 57 during the early net, and 51 during the late net. Average time per session for the early net was 17.5 minutes, and 18.3 minutes for the late net. The (1430z) late net reported 31 sessions for a 100% participation, and the (0000z) early net reported 30 sessions for 97%. QNI's for the morning (Late) session were 114 total, and the evening (Early) session, 94 total.

Outstanding QNI's were Kirk/KO9D-10, Jim/K9ZBM-10, John/WB9OFG-11, Pat/K8LEN-13, Andy/KC9BZL-15, Mark/W9PC-17, Gary/KB9TUI-32, Marv/W9KT-33, and Dick/K9PUI-49.

NCS stations were Brent/N9HZ-3, Mark/W9PC-3, Kirk/KO9D-5, Andy/KC9BZL-7, John/WB9OFG-11, Dick/K9PUI-16, and Gary/KB9TUI-16. THANKS BRENT, MARK, KIRK, ANDY, JOHN, and GARY for being there.

KJ9J, Newt, after going through open-heart surgery is bouncing back quite well. We WELCOME NEWT back to Indiana, and wish him a fine summer at the 'HOME' QTH !!

W9PC, Mark, besides being active on QIN, is the ARRL EC for his county and is doing a great job, especially during the tornado season. We have heard him on the Central Indiana Sky-Warn state-wide coordination net on 2 meters. One evening it sounded like he had his hands full with some potentially severe weather developing in his county. GOOD WORK MARK.

KC9BZL, Andy, ended the month with a leave of absence. He will be missed greatly as he was doing a great job and was doing plenty of work for the nets as NCS and 9RN Liaison. He also handled a lot of our eastern Indiana traffic. We appreciate all you have done Andy and we hope to hear you back on the net soon. HURRY BACK ANDY !!

KB9TUI, Gary, continues to do a fantastic job with the QIN/ICN website, and says maybe he will be able to get us band condition / forecasts for the nets possibly from a local amateur. THANKS AGAIN GARY.

W3GQJ, John, in Granger was QNI again this month and we hope to hear him on the net more often.

VE3NUL, Rick, in Toronto, Ontaria returned to QIN for a visit and it was good to hear Rick back on the net.

WB9OZZ, Homer, is still doing rehab in the hospital in Franklin at their Health Care Center, and we miss Homer's signal. Send him a card or message when you can, I'm sure he will be glad to hear from you.

QIN traffic handled this month (108) was down by 10 from last month which is typical going into the summer months.

Sorry for the late comments this month, but things just did not come together to be able to get it in on time. I will shoot for a sooner report for next month's newsletter.

I hope you all have an opportunity team up with a group to help out and enjoy the ARRL Field Day coming up soon at the end of June. I'm afraid they might forget that CW still exists if we don't get out there and pound the ol' key. Besides, wouldn't all the field animals (cows, horses, dogs, cats, birds, neighbors....etc.) miss being kept awake all night without that "dit dit dah-ing" into the wee hours of the morning at least once a year?

Keep up the good work everyone, and thank you all for your participation and support of the nets.

73, Dick/K9PUI

ICN Net Manager's Comments and Stats for June 2003

Here are the stats for ICN for June:
Sessions reported: 9
QNI: 21
QTC: 8
QTR: 134
Stations: 9D, PUI, OFG, EDF, ZBM, and W3VLL from VA
NCS: OFG, ZBM, 9D

I'm hoping that things will pick back up with the return of cold weather this fall. I'm thinking that I'm not the only one whose time is being gobbled up with outdoor activities, like "Honey-Do's" and just plain ol' enjoying summer...Propagation is difficult this time of year for ICN because the sun is still pretty high in the sky at 2315Z, causing a lot of absorption at 3 Mcs.

Just saw where the WRC'03 meeting has left it to the member-nation's "discretion" as to retain Morse proficiency requirements or not. Of course, the FCC is expected to do away with even the 5 WPM requirement. I am of mixed opinion about this. first, I'm very fond of Tradition, even if it IS only for Tradition's sake sometimes, but that's not the case with Morse. Morse is alive, it's relevant, and as so many of us have discovered, FUN....Therein lies the key to it's continued existence, FUN. We aren't required to prove keyboard skill in order to operate RTTY or PSK, yet those modes enjoy a lot of popularity, too.

Hope everybody is having a great summer and look for you on net in the Fall!

73, John WB9OFG, ICN Manager
