THE WISCONSIN PACKETEER - Newsletter Notes - December 1986
Wisconsin Amateur Packet Radio Assn. P.O. Box 1215, Fond du lac, WI 54935
******* News From The Other Side Of The State ******** by N9EQP
As of a recent meeting in Baldwin WI it looks as though that area will be putting into operation a wide area coverage digipeater. I don't know all of the specifics, as I personally did not attend. It was reported to me the site will be in the Baldwin area, it will be running a KPC-1 and about 80 watts to a Ringo Ranger or equivalent antenna. The site is to be shared with the Army M.A.R.S. repeater on the same tower. Just as a note, I can hit the M.A.R.S. repeater sitting in my font yard with a HT on low power (I.e. 500 mW) and have never had any problem hearing it, so it should be quite a site and nice addition to the LAN in this neck of the North woods.
******* Status of EAU-1 *******
This station is in the planning stages if bring EAU-1 back on the air. As you may know, the site was hit by lightening and the digipeater was almost totally destroyed by the hit. The TNC was fried (to a crisp) and every chip in the GLB unit had to be replaced. Credit should go to WD0GDB for putting the digi on the air. But as of late he is very unsure if he indeed wants to put the thing back on the air due to it's past track record. But EAU-1 shall be resurrected from it's ashes and will be a better station as well. Hopes are high, and most are optimistic as to the fate of the digi. The plans are to put a new pac-comm single port digipeater TNC out at the 200 foot site fed with 1/2 heliax to a 11 element beam pointed at either St. Paul (W0TN or WB0GDB) or Stevens Point (KD9NV) power output shall be sufficient to reach both of these sites and have a viable link to the East or West which at this point is not the case with WD9HFI. If you have any comments, direct them to: N9EQP, 2122 Taft AVe., Eau Claire, WI., 54701.
Packet Radio's error-free message handling capabilities will be put to a test on December 2. For the first time, the Genoa Nuclear Plant emergency drill will include amateur radio involvement and specifically a test of packet communication capabilities between Stoddard, Wisconsin, just North of Genoa and Sount of La Crosse, and Madison's Department of Emergency Government. Amateurs from both Vernon County A.R.E.S. and the La Croose County A.R.E.S. will be manning the packet equipment in the Stoddard area. Dane County operates will be handling the Madison end. With the recent addition of the WA9FIO-1 digipeater near La Croose and Rays' AA9M station in Viroqua, solid connects are now possible between the La Crosse area and Madison though WA9SOU-2. A fairly solid link should assist in demonstrating packet radio's ability t provide emergency communications during this exercise.
******* New Operators In The Area *******
The list of stations on packet is growing and expanding quite a bit as of late. Lots of hamfest purchases have been TNCs with more amateurs than ever interested in packet. In Eau Claire along, thee more stations went online at the same time. They are; K9UXP, W9NNS, and W9FAC. The activity has spread to even rural areas, KB9S is also on and operating a PK-64 and its associated host computer.

One more note: N9AXV-9/N9AXV-2 System
By connecting to N9AXV-2, you will be in a conference mode. Several stations can conenct to N9AXV-2 at once and hold a conference. Each station will see what the other stations send to N9AXV-2. Can be a fun way to meet people on packet. Try connecting to N9AXV-2 via WB9DSA-1 and see if anyone else connects wit the conference bridge.
