KB9LFA'S HOME PAGE

This is a web page devoted to ham radio and hunting. For all you non-hams out there KB9LFA is my amateur call sign. This is a call that is unique in all-the world in that no one else will have this call. Until I give it up when up-grading. At the present time I hold and Advance class license and have plans to get my Amateur Extra in the near future.

I also do some hunting for deer in the State of Illinois with bow and shotgun. I have found that just being in the woods is a very relaxing time and I don't have to get a deer to have a good time. I also have had some very close encounters with squirrels that are very humorous and have provided many a laugh at my expense. Not that I mind, I thought it was funny at the time as well.

I am just getting into contesting and have been having fun with this addition to my hobby. There is always something new and interesting to try with our great hobby of amateur. I won't get into the great debate of Morse code as I feel that it is more of a personal choice than anything else. I try to monitor 20 meters in the early afternoon so if you hear me, I would love to talk with someone new on the radio. This is what I became an amateur for, to talk with new people and learn about them. From anywhere in world, I would love to talk with you. I have made a few contacts with European hams and some with hams in the States. But would love to talk with you as well.

OUR HOME

At the present time I live with my wife, Chris, in a mobile home court on the outskirts of Port Byron IL. We have lived here for most of our 21 years of marriage. Our daughter Amanda, who is now grown and married, resides in Hawaii with her husband, who is a communication repair technician in the United States Navy. Sean is stationed on the USS Crommelin, based out of Pearl Harbor.

MY SHACK

I use a Yaesu FT 101 transceiver for my HF work and a Radio Shack HTX 212 for 2 meters. I am limited to using a mobile antenna on my truck for my base antenna, as the mobile home court doesn't allow outside antennas. Despite this restriction I have worked Europe on 20 meters with a home brew junk pole antenna that I put together on sunny afternoon. I am a member of the Davenport Radio Amateur Club, and have helped provide communications at numerous parades and events around the Quad Cities.

.

. WHO IS THAT BALD HEADED MAN?

PORT BYRON ILLINIOS is located on the Mississippi River just as the river makes a big east to west bend. Making it very easy to find on a map. The big event of our city is the annual tug-fest that happens in August. The barge traffic on Mighty Miss. is stopped for about 4 hours while a 1 1/4-inch rope is stretched between Port Byron and Le Claire Iowa. Afterwards there is lots of good food and live bands. When darkness comes the battle of the river continues with a fire works show that is second to none anywhere in the Quad City area.

QUAD CITIES, consisting of Davenport, Bettendorf, Rock Island, Moline and East Moline, (yeah that's five) sit astride the Mississippi River. We have many events unique to the area, the Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Festival and Marathon, our own River Bandits' baseball team, Q.C. Thunder basketball, and of course the Q.C. Mallards hockey team. Go cart racing in Rock Island, Parades, River boats on both sides of the Mississippi, Museums, the Rock Island Arsenal, and lots more. It is well worth a visit to the area as there are many things to do in and around the Quad Cities. We also have the Mark of the Quad Cities, an arena that is also an ice hockey ring for the Mallards. It has been award the Arena of the Year the last two years running, and it's only been open for three years.

My Dad, W9PBZ, is the man who encouraged me to become a ham and has supported me with all of his heart in this great hobby of ours. It has brought great joy to me and brought us closer together. Thanks Dad for being there for me. He has also been my Elmer and helper in becoming a better ham and person. I also would like to thank my Mom for encouraging me to have more in common with my Dad.
