Amateur Radio of Decatur County, Inc. is involved in several different activities related to the hobby. A few are listed below. Most of the club members are trained severe weather spotters by the National Weather Service from the Indianapolis office. Each February the club sponsors a SEVERE weather spotting class that is offered to the public. It is usually held at the Letts Community Volunteer Fire Department. The class normally is held the last Saturday in February. Contact any of the members from the members list for information. Letts, Indiana is located on Indiana highway 3, 11 miles south of Greensburg and 19 miles north of North Vernon. The Fire Station is 1/2 mile East if Highway 3. When there is SEVERE weather moving towards the county or in the county the club usually starts a net on the 146.955 repeater system and the net control operator will take check-in's from ham operators both mobile and at fixed stations. These operators will then report what they are visually seeing with the weather conditions to the net control and then it is reported immediately to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. SPECIAL EVENT STATION Amateur Radio of Decatur County Inc. will be conducting a Special Event Station to celebrate the Sesquicentennial of Greensburg Indiana during the week of June 13-21, 2009. More Details Soon!FIELD DAY For those non-amateurs Field Day is an event the usually takes place the last weekend in June each year. Hams from all over the country set up portable stations to test their preparedness to communicate in emergency situations. The event is sort of a contest where points are awarded for the number of contacts made in a 24 hour period during the event with Hams all over the entire US participating. It is a fun time and also good training grounds for the ham operators in Decatur County to be prepared for emergency communications. The club will be participating again in 2008 on the weekend of June 28-29 2008. It will be a good time for amateurs, non-amateurs and the general public to learn about the hobby and the services hams provide to the community in times of emergency and disaster. Also it is a hands on event where non-hams can try out the hobby to see if they might like to pursue it. We generally have plenty of food and soft drinks. Again this event is open to the public. We urge everyone to attend next year and join in the fun. The site for Field Day has yet to be determined. Watch this page for further updates. TREE CITY FALL FESTIVAL PARADE Each fall the club has been asked to provide communications for the Tree City Fall Festival Parade. This is an annual event and the club has been providing communications and help line up the parade for several years. |
