I also use packet with APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System). APRS is a program that let's you monitor other Amateur Station on screen. With this software you can plot other station's or object's like Mobiles, Bikes, Truckers, Balloons, Weather in your or other areas, Heracans, Runners in a Marathons, Boats, ARES events, Fox Hunting or D.F. (Directional Finding) some kind of transmitter for Fox Hunt's and so much more. All you need is a radio on eather 2m or 30m hf. I have been running APRS here since Jan. 1995 and gating hf over to the vhf side so other's can enjoy what is out there.
