FIELD DAY 2001, by Shirley Perpall

I would like to start out by saying how pleased I am about the great turnout for Field Day this year held at the Blue Heron Park in Big Pine. It started out with Tom Beilmann, WB0SED, obtaining a waiver approved by the Park and Monroe County Administrators Office, in order to permit us to use the Park all night. Bob Heisey, KF4NWU, did a superior job of writing an article, and distributing it to every publication in the Keys area. With his help and the Citizen staff running their article on the front page of the newspaper we had the greatest number of visitors ever logged during the exercise. A total of 30 persons was a most pleasant sight to us all. There were 12 operators for most of the weekend, with Tony Ortiz, NH2E, a new resident of Key West, and Irwin Darack, KD3TB, vacationing in Key West joining the group for a great time. Barry Rimmer, K4MG, and Tom Beilmann, WB0SED, set up several modes during the weekend to demonstrate APRS, SSTV, and PSK31. The traditional Fish Fry was replaced by a sumptuous Smoked Pork dinner prepared by John Horan, KG4KZT, of the Marathon area, and of course everyone else involved did a fantastic job of pitching in to make for a great time had by all. For those of you that could not participate we will hope to see you next year for a bigger and better Field Day.
