KB3ELK

Mike (KB3ELK) started out with radios in his preteen years with a set of 49 mhz walkie talkies his mother bought him for his 11th birthday. Mike became very intersted in how his voice could be carried from one radio to another with out using wires. Mike decided to take the radios apart to see how they worked, only to find a set of componants he did not understand.

One day while at a yard sale, Mike's mother picked up an old CB radio base station and suprised her son with this rig. Mike used some clothes hangers as a makeshift antenna and was able to make a few contacts from some local truck drivers.

Mike moved from his house to another community when he was 14. While sitting in his living room watching TV, the screen turned black and he heard morse code. Mike searched outside knowing there was some one in his neighborhood with a radio. Mike found the source WA3IGC, George, who was kind enough to allow the young man into his home to look at his radio shack. Mike was very intersted in George's radio room and George took Mike under his wing and ushered him into the hobby of HAM radio. Mike got his license in 1999 while living in the town of Elkton, and no, his call is not a vanity. ELK :)
