KC7OIO, the Lake Washington Ham Club, is a classroom project designed to help 9-12 year olds earn an Amateur Radio License. The classroom project was started in 1993 after ICOM of America agreed to loan the classroom an amateur radio. The classroom teacher, Dave Condon, then received help through the Boeing amateur radio group to earn both the required Novice and Technician class license.
From that start in 1993 the classroom project has gone on to license some 280 students. In addition some teachers and parents have also used the program to earn their amateur license.
A very high percentage of students that have taken the program and later gone on to college have majored in engineering and fields in broadcast.
Currently, ICOM of America, Alinco USA, and the ARRL sponsor the program. In 2003 30 9-10 year olds earned their amateur license.
The students listen on the AA7UJ repeater. The frequency is 145.490 (- offset) (tone 103.5). They would love to visit with you. When calling on the radio, ask "are there any Franklin Kids on frequency?"
