KA1ZGC

KA1ZGC/M has been equipped for HF. Here are a couple of photos:

KA1ZGC/M Close-up of the radios for KA1ZGC/M
Pictured above is KA1ZGC/M, a 1999 Toyota Tacoma. The antenna mounted on the hood is a Hustler RM-75 for 75m phone. It works okay, but is extremely narrow, and since it's base-loaded, the thin wire of the loading coil bares the full brunt of the current node. As a result, after about a half-hour of ragchewing it gets quite hot! Leaning against the front bumper is the 40m whip which WA1HLR and myself wound out of an old CB antenna. It gives an almost flat match at 7200 kHz, and is more forgiving than the RM-75 both in terms of bandwidth and how hot it gets. Not pictured is the Ironhorse 144/440 MHz magmount on the roof. It looks just like a base-loaded cellphone antenna and works quite well. In this shot is the Kenwood TS-130S I just purchased from NK6R in fabulous shape. Below that is the Icom IC-3200 25W 144/440 MHz rig. This mounting scheme is not permanent by any means, but is holding things well-enough in place for now. By an amazing stroke of luck, the lip of the trim around the dashboard vents is perfect for hanging the microphones on, saving me from having to screw mike clips to the dash. Unfortunately, the Tacoma leaves little in the way of free dashboard room. I had mounted the IC-3200 dual bander on the (carpet of) the transmission hump several months ago. The TS-130S has had it's front support clipped onto the IC-3200's mount using modified clothespins. Hey... it's ham radio.
