My interests include QRP (low power) operating and building my
own radio projects. The picture above is of a Norcal
Forty-9er that I packaged in an old Ethernet transceiver enclosure. As
you can see, it's pretty small, and it puts out a fraction of a watt on
about 7.040 Mhz using Morse Code.
I have been a ham operator since 1978, when I finished graduate
school. I have always been interested in radio and electronics, and a ham
license is a ticket to play on the radio bands.
My first radio was a Heathkit HW-2036A VHF FM transceiver, which
I built myself. I build quite a bit of my own equipment, this has included
a packet TNC and several 40 meter QRP transceivers. I also have an
affinity for "older" equipment. This sometimes causes a bit of domestic
tension, as these items tend to be larger and heavier than is deemed acceptable
by others in the family. Nevertheless, I currently own a couple of Baudot
Teletypes, a really neat military HF receiver and
several old commercial VHF FM radios..
I'm the trustee of the Data General Amateur Radio Club's VHF repeater
(on 145.27 in Southboro, MA). I was one of the founding members of this
repeater club, and I helped to erect our original antenna tower. I also
designed an built the first repeater controller and helped with the current
one.
I am currently the president of the Framingham
(MA) Amateur Radio Assosciation, a great radio club with an emphasis
on family participation. We also run an FM repeater (147.15) and have a
complete HF station in the basement of one of the town buildings.
