These are more usable rigs, but still
pretty simple. These are single band rigs.

- Warbler
- Sold by Small Wonder labs: 80M PSK, $49, no case
- Direct conversion wtih xtal filter at RF input and direct
filtering to SSB on xmit, 2-3 Watts
I just built a Warbler this
winter. My best DX was Alberta, Canada. Note that for this
little rig you need a computer and PSK31 software. I'm using
DigiPan 2.0. You only can work about a 1 KHz band at the usual
frequency for PSK31, but it seems to be enough.
- SW+
- Sold by Small Wonder labs: CW,$55 but no case
- Superhet, w. VFO, Xtal Filter, 1.5 Watts
I have the SW40+. My best DX with
it was EA6UN and that got me a 1000 Mile/Watt certificate.
- Cub
- Sold by MFJ: CW, 80,40, 30, 20, 17, 15M, $89.95
- 2W (1W on 17/15M), xtal filter, VFO
- Ten-Tec 1300
- Sold by TenTec: CW, nice case $99
- Superhet, w. VFO, Xtal filter, 2-4 Watts
I have a 1320 (20 M). Best DX is
California. Note that there are a number of common problems with
these Ten-Tec rigs. Solutions are found on the web at
N5ESE's page or
N9BT's page.
- MMR-40
- Sold by Hendricks 40M CW/SSB $100
- Superhet, 6W PEP/CW, VFO, case (but you drill it)
This rig is going to be an entry in the
ARRL Homebrew Challenge. Note that it has a multi-turn control
for the VFO, so telling what frequency you are on might be a
challenge. It does have a port for connecting a frequency readout
but that would cost you extra.
- PSK-20, 30, etc
- Sold by Small Wonder labs: PSK, $100, case $30
- Superhet, crystal controlled, XTAL filter
- OHR 100a
- Sold By Oak Hills Research 80, 40, 30, 20, 15 M. CW $139 incl
Case
- Superhet, Four Pole Xtal filter, 5W
