The Utica Shelby Emergency Communication Association is a group of over 200 hams from all over the Metro-Detroit area. This club is the largest and most active club in southeast Michigan. One of our claims to fame is our Field Day event. In the past several years, we have had the distinction of having the largest Field Day in North America (by virtue of our guest list), and we have placed in the Top 10 overall for the past five years (with a 3rd place overall finish in 2000 - running QRP!).

USECA's other claim to fame is our repeater system. Our repeater is known as the "friendliest repeater in town", and can be found on a frequency of 147.180 MHz. Of course, there is a positive offset to access the repeater and "the use of a 100Hz PL" should be used all the time. The main repeater site is in downtown Utica, near the intersection of Van Dyke and Hall Road (M-59). The antenna is up about 180 feet and a vintage Motorola Motrac provides the RF impetus. The repeater system also has three remote receiver sites at present. One is located in downtown Detroit on top of the Penobscot Building, the second is located at Ford's Michigan Proving Ground, near Romeo, Michigan (one of the highest spots in Macomb County). The third is located on the County building in downtown Mt. Clemens. The three remote receiver sites require a 100 Hz PL tone for access. It is advisable to always transmit a 100 Hz PL in the Detroit area to ensure access to all the repeaters in this area.

What else does USECA and its members do, other than operate Field Day and chat on the repeater? Glad you asked! The club is affiliated with the ARRL and is a Special Service Club. We hold regular VE Testing in the Mt. Clemens area and work with organizations like: RACES, ARES, Skywarn, SCCA, MS Society, and SATERN. We also have a LOT OF FUN! Club members regularly organize camp-outs, boating excursions, trap and pistol shoots, QRP expeditions, "fox" hunts (hidden transmitter), picnics, road rallies, rock and roll parties, CW nets, and bicycle rides.

We have the USECA reflector that you can subscibe to. When you subscribe you can send one email and it will be sent to all who are also subscibed to the list. If you are interested Subscribe to the USECA E-Mail Community

The USECA Express is the club's regular newsletter. The Express is one of the nation's finest amateur radio club newsletters! This is not our opinion, this is fact! Our newsletter has earned the highest rating for newsletters judged all over the country by the Amateur Radio News Service. This fine newsletter is certainly one of the "privileges of membership"! Viewing and printing the USECA Express requires that you obtain and install Adobe Acrobat Reader. Acrobat Reader is available from the World Wide Web.
