DeFOREST AMATEUR RADIO CLUB - K8GE P.O. Box 73 - West Union, OH 45693-0073 SERVING SOUTH CENTRAL OHIO SINCE 1974 MAY 1999 EDITOR: WB8IOW Jerry S. Paquette http://www.qsl.net/k8ge PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Kim - N8YWX Charge up your batteries, fire up those generators and load up on the sunscreen! Field Day weekend is drawing near and you definitely want to be prepared for this wonderful day of contesting, camaraderie and emergency communications practice. Field Day is a great time to test your equipment under less than perfect conditions. I encourage you to participate in this annual club event. We will begin operating at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 26th and will close down at 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 27th. Field Day will again take place at the Lorenz Farm on Logans Lane and ALL ARE WELCOME. Come out and operate for a couple of hours (or stay all weekend if you like), visit with friends, fish if you like (those over 16 will need a fishing license to do so). Those who wish to camp may do so. We always run a little short of operators after midnight, so if you are a night owl, come on out and make some contacts. Don't forget the picnic on Saturday evening at 6:00 PM. Bring your favorite covered dish to share and any tableware and drinks you might need. As in past years, we traditionally begin the day by meeting for breakfast at McDonalds in West Union. Following breakfast, we begin to set up our stations, antennas, etc. as we prepare for the 2:00 start time. I would like to say special thanks to N8XGP and KB8QNT for their generosity in letting us hold this event on their farm. There were 15 people present for the meeting. Kim thanked all for attending the training classes that we had last week, also the people who did the training about radio that was of interest to them. Kim asked for the minutes to be read. Barb N8HIA had a correction to the minutes: Pat Ellis call sign is KC8LVE and the date for the special event at Adams Lake is August 15, 1999. Ed KE8FK made the motion to accept the minutes with the corrected call sign and date as printed in the newsletter, Mike AB8AM second, and the motion carried. Ed KE8FK read the treasurer report with the inflows of $109.75 and the outflows of $92.18 with a total balance of $2,755.54. Ed has two flea market tickets to sell. Jerry WB8IOW said that the tickets had been bought for him and Kim N8YWX. Since they are setting up for the club at the hamfest, they would donate their tickets to the club. Lucius KF8RC made the motion to accept the treasurer report and Norma Jean KB8QNR second with motion carried. Kim N8YWX read a thank you letter from U.S. Representative Rob Portman to Jerry WB8IOW and Kim for attending his town meeting and discussing with him the ham radio spectrum protection bill before the House. George KC8HFV had "attaboy" certificates for Linda KC8JZG for the March net, and Lucius KF8RC for the April net. Barb N8HIA gave a report on the Exercise "99". Betty AA8IQ, Ed KE8FK, and Barb were asked to go to a meeting at the EOC. We need at least two hams at each location, if we can get them. This way one can do communication and one taking notes for the evaluation. If we can get at least twelve to help, then 911 would like to have people to shadow them. It will involve the high school, hospital, 20 students, and EMA. A pad was sent around for people to sign up, more information will be given to us at the next meeting, May 21, 1999. Since there are still some who do not have their ARES ID Badges, we will set up a date and time for this and let everyone know. George KC8HFV discussed Field Day: places thought of by the committee were Ridney N8XGP, Lyle KC8DDY, fair grounds, and Adams Lake. The fair grounds you would have to pay, and Adams Lake is where we are having the special event in August. So it went by points between Ridney and Lyle's place. Lyle has one thing going and that is the elevation. There was limited testing and there are dead areas at Lyre's place. Ridney's has been proven to work. Lyle's has very little natural support or shade, but does have a field. There are trees at the lower side at Lyle's, but planning on having three operating stations it would be hard to place them. There are facilities at Ridney's and he said they could be moved to Lyle's. We would have to find a way to move it. It is the feeling of the committee that even though Lyle has offered his place year after year that the best location for Field Day would be Ridney's. It is greatly appreciated that Lyle has offered his place to the club for Field Day. Since the club has used the port-a- john for the last two years at Ridney's, Kim N8YWX suggested we should pay to get it cleaned out. It may be done with a donation, but motion should be made to get the port-a-john cleaned out and club pay for it at the amount of $25.00 to $30.00 and not to exceed $50.00. Lucius KF8RC made the motion and Heber AA8VV second, motion carried. The picnic will be at 6:00 on Saturday of Field Day, June 26th. Our June 8th meeting will be at the Field Day site, starting at 6:30 p.m. Reminder that breakfast at West Union McDonald's before setting up for Field Day on the 26th of June. As a reminder, Jerry WB8IOW and Kim N8YWX will be taking up their trailer to the hamfest in Dayton and if you have anything to sell and want Jerry to take it up for you please have it at his house by Thursday. They will take their grill and do hot dogs, and have drinks. You can lock items in the trailer and not have to carry them around with you during the day at the hamfest. Manchester remote site may be at the bread place, Jerry WB8IOW needs to talk to David Scott. Jerry will be looking for a radio at Dayton. When you are in Manchester you will have to go to minus 600 and then you are going to have to punch up the wake up code, 500 even if you have the PL in your radio. The equipment at Stuart Station is working, the link from the Stuart Station is so fast that you don't know that it is being used. Dick W8ZFO asked what the horrible sound is on the repeater and Jerry said he'd take care of it. Kim N8YWX said the official word for the July 4th parade will be July 4th at 2:00 p.m., which is a Sunday. The Five Mile Marine Run is on July 3rd, at 7:30 a.m. Kim thanked Karen KB8QMV for the cookies. Hazmat refresher course will be in June, listen on net for the date for sure. Radiology course will be in August. The three clubs picnic/campout is July 24th and 25th at Chief Logan's Gap. The picnic is on the 24th of July. There will be more information later. There will be a class in September if there is enough interest. The classes would be on Tuesday and Thursday. Jerry WB8IOW and Barb N8HIA went to a Y2K meeting called by the EMA on May 5th. At Dayton Power and Light Y2K meeting we are asked as ham's to help. Most power plants will use ham's on 9-9-99, and there are December 31st concern's. There will be more update at the next meeting. Kim N8YWX congratulated Mike AB8AM on his 10th anniversary, cancer free. Kim said Kelly KB8UAO brought yard articles that were made at the school that are for sale. George KC8HFV needs logs for the contest. Norma Jean KB8QNR won the split the pot, $10.00, congratulations! Kim N8YWX asked for a motion to adjourn, Ridney made the motion to adjourn and Barb N8HIA second. The meeting closed at 8:27 p.m. 73 Barb N8HIA - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From the V.P. Well all I can say is I'm glad I didn't have to decide on a Field Day site. All I had to do was Chair the committee. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Field Day committee for all the work they have done. So attaboy to Barry KB8OMG, Bill N8SND, Ed KE8FK, Barb N8HIA and Marlene KC8JXE. They started off with several site possibilities but it came down to two, the Lambert farm and the Lorenz airstrip. This is where the committee had a tough job. It was finally suggested that they use a point system to decide. Well, after a careful checking of the plusses and minuses, including location, facilities some limited testing etc, etc, etc. It was reported to me that there recommendation was the Lorenz airstrip. Both choices had good and bad points but it seemed that last year went well and the air strip is the most central. I do, however, want to mention that if I can get with Lyle and with his permission keep his farm on the slate for other club activities such as picnics special events etc. Well nothing carved in stone but something to think about. Finally on behalf of the DeForest radio club I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Lyle, Jayne, Karen and Glenna and all the Lambert's for the very generous offer of their property for the clubs use. Well, enough page space for now. I look forward to seeing everyone at the picnic in June. (Club officers first in the food line) Just kidding. See you all later on the bands. 73 George KC8HFV. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ARES REPORT WB8IOW - District 4 DEC The Adams County ARES and Members of the DeForest A.R.C. participated in a tornado drill May 25th. Just when you thought modern H-Ts had included just a bout every feature conceivable, along comes Alinco with its new DJ-195T that includes--get this--an experimental "mosquito repel" feature. Alinco USA Branch Manager Katsumi Nakata, KE6RD, says the unit emits an electronic tone to keep the annoying insects away from the vicinity of the radio. "It's a feature we added just for fun," Nakata said. "The mosquito repel feature could make the DJ-195T the first radio capable of de-bugging a Field Day operating position," he added with a smile.
