PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Kim - N8YWX
As we enter into one of the busiest times for Ham operators who
are severe weather spotters, we are hopeful for a gentle crossing
over of seasons. The groundhog has predicted the coming of an
early spring and we all know that spring can fight like a tiger as
it wrestles with winter in a kind of heavyweight battle for
supremacy. Personally, I hope warm weather wins, but we must be
prepared for the inevitable storms that mark the transition.
Are you a trained weather spotter? Has it been a few years since
you last attended classes? You should know that your
certification needs to be updated every two years at minimum.
The DeForest ARC will hold the annual weather spotter training on
March 16th at the Ohio Valley Vocational School beginning at 7:00
PM. A representative from the National Weather Service (NWS) in
Wilmington will present this years program and will be available
for your questions.
The March meeting of the DeForest ARC will include a presentation
by KC8HFV, George Larter on Net Control duties during a severe
weather net and also by WB8IOW on the specific information
requested by the NWS during severe weather nets. I hope to see
everyone of you at the meeting on March 9th.
Congratulations to Jane Lambert, KC8LUH, and Pat Ellis (call sign
pending), who recently passed the requirements for the no-code
Technician license. I would also like to congratulate
KB8OMG, Barry Storer and KC8HFV, George Larter who passed the
requirements for the Advanced. Also passing the Extra written
exam was KE8FK, Ed Lock. Way to go, ED!

MINUTES OF
FEBRUARY 1999 MEETING
Barbara Lock - N8HIA
The president Kim N8YWX opened the meeting of the Deforest Amateur
Radio Club on February 9, 1999, at 7:00 p.m., with the pledge of
allegiance.
Kim N8YWX introduced the guest speaker, Jack Bradford KA8URK, West
Union Fire Chief with the West Union Fire Department and Steve
Downey KC8JZH with the West Union Life Squad. Jack discussed how
we can work with the fire department in case of a disa ster or any
other problems were we are needed as amateur radio operators.
Jack mentioned the area’s of flood, search and rescue, tornado,
any where that a large scale operation would be needed to help the
public and the fire department. Jack talked about the emergency
equipment and the radio equipment they have in the emergency
vehicles. The amateur radio operators could help as needed by the
fire department. The fire department and the life squad do have
amateur radio people also who work for them. They are planning
for a addition to the firehouse. A new place for EOC in basement
area fully contained underneath the firehouse addition, are in the
planning stage, hoping to start this summer. After some discussion
the club members went out to look at the emergency vehicle. We
thank Jack for taking his time to come to our meeting it was very
informative. We also want to thank Steve Downey KC8JZH for
coming to our meeting and representing the West Union Life Squad.
Kim N8YWX gave certificates to the 1998 officers, thanking them
for all the work they did during the year. Larry Cobb WD8LSN Vice
President, Debbie Lorenz KB8QNT Secretary, Ed Lock KE8FK
Treasurer, Dick Sauer W8ZFO Public Information Officer.
Kim N8YWX welcomed the new officers for 1999. Ed Lock KE8FK
Treasurer, given a very large pencil for his entries into his
treasurer book for the year of 1999. Barb Lock N8HIA Secretary,
given a very thick ledger to pass down her minutes to the next
secretary. George Larter KC8HFV Vice President, given a bottle of
advil and a binder with dividers for his many jobs as Vice
President and hopefully few headaches in the coming year.
Kim N8YWX thanked George KC8HFV for helping by doing the meeting
last month for Kim. Kim was appreciative of the thoughts and
feelings of the club.
The committees required by the club by-laws for this year are:
Asset management: Richard Newbauer KA8EKC, Mike Bailey AB8AM,
Financial: Jerry Paquette WB8IOW, Ed Lock KE8FK, George Larter
KC8HFV, Legal: Jerry Paquette WB8IOW, Lucius Merrill KF8RC
Secretary's report was accepted as published in the newsletter.
Motion was made by Mike AB8AM and second by Lucius KF8RC, motion
passed.
Pat Ellis read a letter from Jerry and Dorothy Silman, Jerry
KB8PVY and Dorothy KB8TQU, stating they wanted to join the club
but would not be able to participate in all the meetings. They
are members of the Georgetown club and have interchanged with us
on occasion, such as the picnic and chili supper. Enjoyed being
with our club at these occasions.
The treasurer report was read by Ed KE8FK, balance as of January
12, 1999, $1761.65, inflows $417.00, outflows $274.41, leaving
as balance of $1904.24 on February 9, 1999. The liability
insurance has been paid for this year. Glenna KC8JXD wanted to
know how much it cost yearly to run the repeater. The budget has
to be made up for this year. The cost yearly is the phone bill.
Glenna made motion to accept treasure report as read and Lyle
KC8DDY second, motion accepted.
George KC8HFV gave a report on the repeater. Working on repeater
committee, have maybe from Larry WD8LSN. List of people that are
committed to helping with the repeater Bill N8SND, Jerry WB8IOW,
Ed KE8FK. The committee for the repeater should be complete by
next month. Field day, Bill N8SND will help and Barry KB8OMG is
thinking on it. George still has work to do on the list of help
for field day. George still has the budget to set up and
finalize. George would like to see training on the repeater for
the committee members as a review and bring up to date on
procedures. Lightening protector is left on at all times on the
repeater now. The next major project is having a listening
station in Manchester area. Bill N8SND has an idea of using one
radio in the area on 146.40, beam to Stuart Station, Dayton Power
& Light. A minus off set would bring up repeater. Jerry WB8IOW
made a motion to obtain a radio for Manchester area with a cost of
$700.00 for the purchase of dual band and equipment needed,
Lucius KF8RC second, vote carried. George KC8HFV, Bill N8SND, and
Lucius KF8RC are to look for possible site.
Kim N8YWX reminded the people who have not gotten their picture
made for ID badges for ARES, that they will be taken at the March
meeting. It is important to have the badges, since it makes it
easier for you to be identified when out in the field working.
Kim N8YWX thanked Pat for the refreshments for this month.
Refreshments for March will be Norma KB8QNR.
Kim N8YWX said there had been a meeting of officers to come up
with ideas to cover a wide range to encompass interest of all club
members. In March meeting George KC8HFV will explain the net
control duties and have sheets for logging. Jerry WB8IOW will
give report on what the weather bureau expects to have report back
to them. The weather training will be March 16, at the vocational
school at 7:00. The April meeting will be about Y2K. May's
meeting we would like to have the training sessions as we have
had before, these were short 15-20 minute talks on different
aspects of radio operations.
The Dayton Hamfest is May 14,15,16. June meeting we thought of
having people bring in their QSL cards or certificates for all to
look at and discuss. Also field day is in June the 26 and 27. We
will have the chili supper as usual. November we thought of a
sweepstakes using the club call for the station doing CW and
having fun. Lyle KC8DDY asked about the Redbud Festival, if the
club would like to set up at the fair grounds. It would cost
$30.00 for a spot. The club could do radio grams, and pass out
literature. Kim N8YWX will check into it for the club. Special
event station August 15 under club call, using HF band and 2
meter, celebrating our 25th anniversary of the DeForest Amateur
Radio Club. It will be published in the QST and we will have QSL
card on certificate. There are two possible sites, Serpent Mount
or Adams Lake, to be checked. For the anniversary celebration we
will invite section manager and other ARRL people for the
Christmas party to end our year’s 25th a nniversary.
At the last meeting Pat said she would help spread the word on the
club activities through the Adams County Travel and Visitors
Bureau newsletter. Karen KB8QMV would work with Pat. Dick W8ZFO
is our public information officer and Pat and Karen would work
with Dick. Marlene KC8JXE made the motion, Lucius KF8RC second,
the motion carried.
National Weather Service sent certificates and a letter. Kim
N8YWX read the letter to the club thanking all for helping during
the year with the weather nets. The certificates went to Jerry
WB8IOW, Kim N8YWX, Glenn KB8OMF, George KC8HFV, Richard KA8EKC,
Vondon KJ8I, Barry KB8OMG, Debbie KB8QNT, Ridney N8XGP, Bill
N8SND, Barb N8HIA, Ed KE8FK. Kim said if you know of anyone who
did run a weather net and their name is not here to please call.
The names for the list come from the information sent to Barb to
do up the weather reports sent into ARRL.
Project for Ash Ridge is still to be done. Bill N8SND knows
packet program. Jerry WB8IOW said Dayton Power and Light still
said it is okay to do the project. Jerry has the equipment but
Dayton Power and Light said to wait till they remove their
equipment. Cost to climb the tower will be $100.00.
Hazmat awareness to be announced, time and date, hopefully by the
next meeting in March.
Dee KB8VBH and Joe KB8VLF donated a desk to the club. It is
painted blue, 60x34, and very heavy. There is a typewriter stand
and drawers on one side.
There are two test sessions, one at Jerry's WB8IOW, Thursday the
11th, at 7:00 p.m. George KC8HFV, ED KE8FK and Jerry WB8IOW will
be the VEs. The second test session will be Thursday the 18th,
at 6:00 p.m. at the Adams County Hospital. Bill N8SND , Lucius
KF8RC, and Jerry WB8IOW will be the VEs.
Donna Jones, wife of Henry Jones, member of the club who passed
away, called Jerry WB8IOW to ask if he would try to sell two
pieces of equipment of Henry's for her. There is a dual band
diamond antenna 7900 for $130.00, and a CD player for $230.00, one
year old.
The club may be asked to assist Dayton Power and Light with Y2K on
December 31, 1999, at midnight for communications. The Red Cross
has a website with information on the Y2K. It has some good
information.
George KC8HFV will be helping Kelley KB8UAO with the net. Kelley
is having a problem with his radio. George would like to see
about having code practice on the 147.18. More information will
be up coming on the practice.
Linda KC8JZG won the split the pot $14.50, congratulations!
Dick W8ZFO made the motion to send out self addressed and stamped
envelopes about the membership and Lucius KF8RC second motion and
vote past.
Motion to adjourn at 9:00 p.m.
I want to thank Pat for taking the minutes for me since I could
not be at the meeting. See you in March!

A.R.E.S. REPORT
I want to thank Kim N8YWX for reminding everyone at the February
meeting about the pictures for the ID badges for ARES. We will be
doing the pictures for ones who did not get them the last time.
The Amateur Radio Emergency Service ID badges are an important
part as they help to identify the person quickly in the time of an
emergency. I hope to see you at the March meeting. We have been
lucky so far this year with the weather. Our season for
unpredictable weather is coming up fast, hopefully we will not
have much action in terms of the weather. May it come in like a
lamb and go out as a lamb!

Dates for this years Tornado drills were announced by the National
Weather Service at the February 20th meeting. The purpose of

recommended that participating stations operate on emergency power
during the drill to test their effectiveness. All amateur
operators are encouraged to participate, whether you are a trained
spotter or not. Dates are as follows:
Kentucky - Tues., Mar. 9th at 10:07 am
Ohio - Wed., March 10th at 9:50 am
