PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Kim - N8YWX
I enter into 1999 with enthusiasm for the activities in the year
to come. This year marks the 25th anniversary of our existence.
Recently, I met with our new Vice President, George Larter
KC8HFV, our new Secretary, Barb Lock N8HIA and Treasurer Ed Lock
KE8FK. We exchanged ideas on possible club activities and George,
Barb and Ed brought me up to date on the January meeting that I
was unable to attend. I was especially pleased to hear that Pat
Ellis and Karen KB8QMV had volunteered to further spread the word
about HAM RADIO and DeForest club activities through the
organizations they are affiliated with in Adams County. Their
efforts will supplement and they will work with Dick W8ZFO, our
PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER.
I would like to extend my thanks to George for running a very
effective meeting and to Linda and Barb for making sure you all
had refreshments! And thanks to all of you whose thoughtful
notes and phone calls have made such a difference during this
difficult time.
I look forward to seeing you all at the February 9 meeting when
our guest speaker will be Jack Bradford, KA8URK from the West
Union Fire Department.

FIRE CHIEF - HOT TOPICS
West Union Fire Chief, Jack Bradford will speak at the February
meeting of the DeForest ARC. He will be bringing the new command
vehicle as well. Jack, also known as KA8URK will address the club
on how Hams can best assist the Fire Department when called out
as communicators. Many of you have seen the new trailer from
either the club meeting last summer or from Field Day, 98 and the
ham radio equipment that was installed to facilitate
communication when needed. It is important that we make sure that
our assistance is a help and not a hindrance to the important
work the Fire Department does by taking the time to receive
instruction on response procedure. I hope you will all be able to
attend.

LOOKING BACK
(On March 21, 1975, the first edition of the newsletter
of the Adams & Brown Counties AREC was published.)
ADAMS & BROWN COUNTIES AREC
VOLUME 1 NUMBER 1
3/21/75
Emergency Coordinator:
Robert C. Stratton - WA8CFX
Assistant EC - Adams Co.
Jerry S. Paquette - WB8IOW
Assistant EC - Brown Co.
Harold T. King - K8YGV
This newsletter is the first representing the Adams and Brown
Counties Amateur Radio Emergency Corps. There are four main
reasons for sending out a monthly newsletter:
1. To inform members who were not able to attend the previous
meeting of what took place there.
2. To remind each member to check into the weekly net on either
50.6 MHz and/or 146.52 MHz on 6 AM and 2 FM meters respectively
when possible.
3. To have a small publication in which any member may write;
possibly to advertise a piece of equipment for sale or just to
make a comment.
4. Finally, to provide you with a piece of scratch paper to write
down your operating log when you can't find your log book because
it's buried under everything in your shack---like mine usually
is!
FORMATION OF THE ADAMS AND BROWN COUNTIES AREC
The Adams & Brown Counties AREC was formed out of and is a part
of the Southwest Ohio AREC. Brown County had already been
included in the Southwest Ohio group and WA8CFX was the Assistant
EC for that County. He spoke enthusiastically about the group's
activities and beneficial aspects during an emergency to Hams in
the Adams/Brown Co. area and encouraged them to join.
But the Southwest Ohio group was not sure they wanted to stretch
as far as Adams Co. It seemed Adams Co. was alone which started
the wheels turning. WA8CFX, along with Don Camery (WA8TSX) spoke
to several people in the Southwest Ohio group and it was decided
that the most workable situation would be an Adams & Brown
Counties group as a sister group with the Southwest Ohio group.
WA8CFX was appointed as our Emergency Coordinator, with Harold
King to assist in Brown Co. and Jerry Paquette to assist in Adams
Co.
We started out with about 5 members and quickly grew to 11 by our
first meeting, which was Jan. 14, 1975. Presently our membership
is 18 strong and growing.
For anyone not yet aware of it, we meet the second Tuesday of
each month with the time and location to be announced on the
weekly net and in this newsletter. So let's all go the meetings
(Bring along your XYLs--I would like some company SRP) Usually a
ride can be arranged for you by contacting WA8CFX, K8YGV or
WB8IOW. Coffee will be served at the meeting.
OUR LAST MEETING
The last meeting was March 11, 1975 at Eastern High School.
WA8CFX announced that our group has been honored by a request for
him to speak at the Dayton Hamvention on the subject of rural
AREC. This is a great honor as we are such a new group.
The Dayton Hamvention will be held April 25, 26, and 27 with
WA8CFX to speak on Saturday (Apr. 26), between 2 and 3 PM. We
also began formulation of an emergency plan but unfortunately ran
out of time before it could be completed. This project is of
utmost importance and will be the first order of business at the
next meeting. When the emergency plan is complete a copy will be
sent to all members. Other than the above, our time was occupied
lasoing net control stations, idle chatter and drinking coffee!
The next meeting will be April 8, 1975, 7:30 PM, at Eastern High
School (just South of Macon, Ohio on SR 62 in Brown Co.) Hope to
see you there!
