SERVING SOUTH CENTRAL OHIO SINCE 1974

SILENT KEYS
Please remember in your prayers KB8VBK Henry Jones (Winchester, OH), KC4VGF Charlie Kendall (Maysville, KY), and KA8QWZ Faye Carrigan (Manchester, OH), all former members of the DeForest Amateur Radio Club. May you all rest in peace.
PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
March 1998

The March meeting of the DeForest Amateur Radio Club was well attended with 27 present including 1 guest, Will Clark, son of KB8YKO and KB8UFU, Beth and Damon Clark. Also included were new members: Linda Larter, wife of KC8HFV, George and Don Myers, Shannon, Marlene and Holly Potts, all from the current no-code technician class. We are glad you joined us and look forward to hearing you on the air!!

Please remember in your thoughts and prayers the family and friends of Henry Jones, KB8VBK who is now a silent key. Henry was a special part of our lives and will be sadly missed.

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend a meeting sponsored by the Queen City Emergency Net and Red Cross in Blue Ash. Barb Lock, N8HIA, our ARES Emergency Co-ordinator also attended. The goal of this meeting was to establish reliable communications and call up procedures that would be the most effective and reliable within the served agencies. It was a most informative meeting and an opportunity to meet with many whom we had contact with during the flood of 1997. I hope to receive the minutes of that meeting and can give a more detailed accounting at our April 14 meeting.

With the onset of spring comes increased activity with Dayton Hamvention, field day, contests, and other activities not entirely related to Ham radio. Simply put, our lives are about to get a little busier! I want to express my sincere appreciation to those of you who have volunteered in any way to advance the DeForest club and have followed through with that which you have committed to do. We are volunteers, all of us with separate lives outside of amateur radio and it is, after all a hobby. It happens to be a hobby that I enjoy and keeping that in mind is something I think we need to sit back and do every once in awhile. So sit back, take a deep breath and.....enjoy!

"It is one of the beautiful compensations of this life that no one can sincerely try to help another without helping himself."

                    DeForest Amateur Radio Club Minutes
                          by Debbie Lorenz KB8QNT
                               March 10, 1998

The March meeting of the D.A.R.C. was called to order by President Kim
Paquette. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by members present.
Vondon Applegate requested a moment of silence for KB8VBK Henry Jones
passing. Kim also told of 2 other silent keys, KC4VGF Charlie Kendall
    and KA8QWZ Faye Carrigan.

The Weather Spotters class was well attended with 46 people there.

At the Cincinnati Hamfest, Kim Paquette, Barb Lock, and Jerry Paquette
attended the ARES seminar and received information.

The minutes of the last meeting were read. Richard Newbauer made a
motion seconded by Barb Lock to approve. Motion passes.

The Treasures report was read. Lucius Merrill made a motion seconded by
Jerry Grooms to approve. Motion passed.

Vice President's report: Larry Cobb reported that the cavities are
realigned and had asked GE to donate a rack for a functional cabinet by
the end of the month. He also submitted a Repeater Budget for 1998. The
damage the repeater received last year, the insurance company has
    denied the claim for $136.00.

A police report has been filed for the TNC and transceiver taken from
the club and not returned. An insurance claim will be submitted for
    $360.00.

A motion was made by Jerry Grooms seconded by Bill Mangus to accept the
    Repeater Budget. Motion passed.

Repeater Committee: Larry submitted a list of names with their
qualifications who should be on the committee. Lots of questions were
asked on who should be on the committee and who should have a key.
Larry felt if the VP is responsible for the repeater, he should have a
key. Jerry Paquette explained who has a key and why as to per request
of WVXU with Bill Mangus, because he lives there and can check on our
equipment as well as theirs, Vondon Applegate because he is familiar
with the repeater and is available in emergencies, and Jerry Paquette
who has installed and does most of the controlling of the repeater and
some building maintenance and will take care of the 911 communications
battery system. Jerry will ask WVXU for a key to be for the vice
    president.

Lucius Merrill made a motion seconded by Jerry Paquette to accept the
Repeater Committee as proposed. Jerry Grooms said it was the VP's right
to pick who ever he wanted for the committee. Lucius consulted the by-
laws and agreed with Jerry Grooms. Kim asked those present if they
agreed with the information as presented by Jerry G. and Lucius. All
agreed and the motion was not acted on because it was covered in the
by-laws. The repeater committee now consists of: KB8JTJ, KF8IX, KJ8I,
    WB8IOW, and WD8LSN.

Barb Lock asked to make sure Larry got a key. Under protest of the
membership Vondon Applegate gave up his key for Larry. The key was
offered to Jerry and Jerry asked Vondon to give it to Larry.

(Editor note: following the meeting, Jerry contacted WVXU and asked for
a key for the vice president that could be passed down each year, as
needed. The key was approved by WVXU and WVXU asked to be kept
informed who had the key. Jerry will take care of the notification.)

Assets Management: Richard Newbauer and Mike Bailey met at the EOC
office and went over the list. They need the serial numbers off the 2
packets, contact Larry for the one at GE and Jerry for the one on Gift
Ridge. Anything anyone else has stored for the club in their homes,
please bring list to Mike and Richard. Someone said they had some
records from the times we met in the commissioners office. (Note, I
wrote this down but not who said it)

Refreshment Break (Ed. note, see "OATMEAL GOODIES" this newsletter)

Old Business: Dayton Hamvention-the tent structure Debbie looked up in
past minutes was a plastic tarpaulin that was put over the old
structure for $3.00. Ridney Lorenz purposed that he get a lightweight
structure with tarpaulins, bungies, and plastic buckets and swap the
old structure with the club for $135.00 difference.

It was suggested that the Finance committee set the value. Vondon
Applegate made a motion to table until the Finance meets to access the
value. No vote was taken since it was then suggested since 2 of the
members of the financial committee were at the meeting they set the
value of the old structure. The members (WB8IOW and KE8FK) suggested
that the maximum value of the old structure would be $75. No one in
attendance disputed the $75 value. It was then voted on and approved to
    accept Ridney's proposal.

Club Banner - decided not to do.

Fund-raiser Lucius Merrill reported that the JTM hamburgers sold at
the IGA are sold by the store and it's employees only. Cannot be done
    as a fund-raiser.

New Member Booklet - tabled until next month.

New Business: Jerry, Bill and Ed went to the National Weather Service
in Wilmington to see if anything has changed in reporting. We report
    like we always have.

                               Announcements:

Haz-mat training with Fred Starcher is April 21st and 23rd, 6 to 10 pm
at the West Union Fire Department.

Field Day - Larry will not be available for field day so anyone who
would like to chair, contact Kim Paquette.

The Red Cross Queen City Emergency will meet to discuss nets and the
flood of 1997. Kim and Barb are going.

Damon read a very touching remembrance poem for Henry written by his
wife Beth KB8YKO. (Ed. note, see "AN ANGEL CALLING", next article)

Jerry and Paul Howelett are working on the Emergency Alerting System.
Paul is seeking partial grants for community warning sirens for Seaman
and Manchester for tornado and will try to get another one for West
Union. Jerry asked Paul for the codes for the sirens so he (Jerry)
might be able to build a circuit to alert HAM operators if the sirens
are set off. Paul will get the codes for Jerry.

Ed reported that Wilmington called a net on March 10th at 9:50 am for a
tornado drill for Kentucky. He got 7 check-ins, all in Ohio.

    Meeting adjourned.

It is still hard for most of us to believe that Henry is gone. Though I will miss him always, every time I think of him, I'll see him this way... AN ANGEL CALLING Yesterday's airwaves alive in my mind, a grizzled voice comes through, And says to us, don't make a fuss, I'll always be with you. He says he's fine now, not to fear, and making it on his own. The sun on his face, a real nice place, and he doesn't feel alone. He's faced the toughest times and more, he's handled his fair share. He's left this earth, for what it's worth, and all its hard times there. Dealt a hand that most of us, would never want to hold. No ace up his sleeve, it's hard to believe, the times he refused to fold. So it comes as no surprise to me, to see him plain as day. Standing tall, amongst them all, and then I hear him say.... You'll hear me now, just listen close, to a different frequency. I'll meet you there, my friend, I swear, though I'm a silent key. Weep not for the days gone by, nor what will never be. In the heart of a friend, love never ends, I live in memory. So take to the airwaves one more time, a net to end them all. I've rigged a tower, with the Almighty's power, and found me a heavenly call. Flower KB8YKO

The training sessions will begin promptly at 6:00 pm and continue till 10:00 pm. Training is open to all Ham operators, Fire department personnel, police and EMS personnel. We need to know how many will be attending. Please contact Fred Starcher 587-4345 if you plan to attend.
FIELD DAY IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER K8GE will be a GREAT field day call!! One of the highlights of the year for the ham community is the weekend spent making radio contacts using emergency power and under less than everyday conditions. In other words, no commercial power. This year' s field day will be held June 27th and 28th. Due to previous commitments, WD8LSN will be unable to chair field day committee. We need a volunteer to head and coordinate this year's field day event. Interested? Give me a call at 544-3763 evenings or 544-3325 daytime. You can also call me on the repeater or e-mail me at: paquette@bright.net. N8YWX
