SERVING SOUTH CENTRAL OHIO SINCE 1974
JANUARY 2001
EDITOR: WB8IOW - Jerry S. Paquette
From The President's Shack
--------------------------
Well we almost have 1 month gone, 2001 is underway. We now have a new
president. Just watched the inauguration of George W. Bush as the 43rd
President of the United States. It would also seem that winter is in full
force, as I write this article there is already about 4 inches of snow on
the ground with a chance of 4 or 5 more inches to come. Looks like a good
radio day.
Well let me take this opportunity to offer my apologies for not checking
into the net recently, work has been keeping us pretty busy with overtime,
and I've been coming home pretty well spent. Anyway I do apologize and
will try to be present in the future.
The meeting in January was well attended, and I was very pleased to see
everyone there. That is what will make our club something to be proud of.
I also was glad to see this willingness to help out with net control,
refreshments and etc. I would also like to remind you that if you have any
ideas for events or programs that you would like club to participate in or
arrange please let myself or any of the officers know. We would all like
to hear from you. I have a couple of ideas, more on these later.
Jerry mentioned that there would be a possibility of a General Class
theory class if we could get 5 or more commitments. And I read in the
Grant Amateur Radio Association newsletter that they may want to have some
radio classes also. Maybe we could make this a joint effort, something to
think about.
Now a plug for cw. As you may or not know I am a member of F.I.S.T.S. The
International Morse Preservation Society as are a few other members of our
club. Every Sunday the have a Slo-Chat group that meets on or about
21.158 MHz from 17:00z 'til 23:00z. They are looking for check-ins.
So this Sunday from 1:00pm till 6:00pm (our time) tune around 15 meters
(21.158)and have a QSO you don't have to be a FISTS member everyone is
welcome.
They usually operate from about 5 to 15 wpm. Give it a listen. The FISTS
members hang around frequencies ending in 58 i.e. .058,.158 etc. on all
bands the 30meter freq. is 10.118. They are more than willing to slow to
even 3 wpm a good way to sharpen your CW skills. In fact 15wpm is usually
fast. Just thought I would mention it. Anyway that's about it fer now. cul
73's.

NEXT MEETING TUESDAY - February 13
WEST UNION, OH ABCAP Senior Citizens Center...
Across from the front steps of the courthouse;
next to the Sundry Store

MINUTES OF MEETING January 9, 2001 Barbara Lock - N8HIA
-------------------------------------------------------
The meeting was called to order by our president, George KK8J. George led
us in the pledge to the flag. We had 23 people in attendance for our first
meeting of the New Year. George asked for the reading of the minutes by
Barb N8HIA. Ed KE8FK made the motion to accept the minutes as printed in
the newsletter. Linda KC8JZG seconds the motion and the motion carried.
George asked for the treasurer report by Marlene KC8JXE, Marlene read the
report for November through January 9, 2001
together. The balance as of November 14, 2000 $1,671.02, with inflows of
$409.00 and outflows of $353.37, making the balance for January 9, 2001
$1,726.65. Marlene passed out the report for all to read. Barb made the
motion to accept the treasurer report as read by Marlene. Roy KE4MZN
seconds the motion and the motion carried.
George asked Ed if he had anything to report for vice president. Ed had
two certificates to hand out for doing the nets. Ed gave Pat KC8LVE for
November and Barb one for December.
George gave Dick W8ZFO a certificate for supporting the club and having
his advertisement in the newsletter. George asked if the club would want
to exchange memberships with the presidents of the other clubs, as we have
done in the past. Lucius KF8RC made the motion to exchange the memberships
with the presidents of the other participating clubs. Kim N8YWX seconds
the motion and motion carried. George said he would pursue the club banner
for the club and get back with the information at another meeting.
Jerry WB8IOW said the weather spotter training would be March 13, 2001, at
the vocational school at 6:30 p.m. It is a good idea that you take the
training every year if you can. You can go every two years, but it is a
refresher course and up date if you can go every year.
Kim said the emergency management agency would be holding a radiology
course in February. The date will be announced later. It is one of the
long courses but you can use it for your refresher course also. There are
some of us that need the refresher course.
Marlene needed to know what the club wanted to do about the Dayton
Hamvention. Marlene got a list of the ones wanting tickets and to get two
spots for the club. Ed and Barb said they would take the equipment up to
the hamfest.
Linda, Barb and Kim brought refreshments. The refreshments were enjoyed by
all. Thanks to the ones who remembered.
George recognized Matt KC8LMJ, congratulating him on making Eagle Scout.
Jerry said there was interest in having a general class. He said he would
want at least five people with a commitment to staying with the classes
until finished. It would be after the first of the year. There are three
people that are interested right now. Barry KB8OMG would do code if there
were enough people. Jerry said he would need good commitment and there
would be ten classes. It will be mention on the net with a decision made
next month.
Ed would like to get the net control list set up for this year. The net
control list is as follows: January Ed KE8FK February Barry KB8OMG March
Roy KE4MZN April Don KC8JXC May Linda KC8JZG June Jerry WB8IOW July Karen
KB8QMV August Lucius KF8RC September Kim N8YWX October George KK8J
November Pat KC8LVE December Barb N8HIA Jerry said he thought the club
should buy the refreshments for the meetings. That way we did not have to
try and get a list of people for each month. Barb said she would get the
refreshments for the meetings. Jerry said they would still donate the
coffee. Lucius made the motion for the club to buy the refreshments and
Barry second and motion carried.
Jerry said that we could go in on the web page and up date information
such as new address, phone numbers and etc.
Jerry has been asked to go to a three-day seminar on terrorism and
sabotage. Paul at the EMA asked Jerry to represent the club at the
seminar.
Jerry said he is having Field Day at his place this year. We can come if
we want to, he thought everyone had a good time last year. If we decide to
have Field Day some where else, he is still having Field Day at his place.
Marlene had a letter on scholarship for amateur radio operators, it has to
be in by April. Jerry will put it in the newsletter. Marlene also read a
letter from the Chamber of Commerce asking if there were any changes in
their information. It has Jerry as contact and it was decided to leave it
that way.
Barb won $8.00 split the pot this month. After the meeting Jerry will pass
out connectors and paperwork on how to put together. He will help show you
how to do the connectors. If anyone wants any they can buy them from Jerry
and he will give the money to Marlene for the club.
Kim made the motion for the club to adjourn at 8:05 p.m. and Linda second,
motion carried.

and the DeForest ARC have adopted the new connector. The connector is
available for re-sale by WB8IOW. The cost to club members will be the same
as the cost to the club. A full connector, both halves will cost you
$1.50. That includes: 2 red shells, 2 black shells, 4 thirty-amp contacts,
