What a day on 6 meters here at Powder Mountain.
I set up yesterday only to work a few stations with my M2-6m7 and 100w
because my 6 meter TE finally gave up only putting out 150w.
So living down the mountain about a mile I got a ride from the receptionist
at the nearby Powder Ridge Condo's because my bronco was busy as a tower.
Getting up on Sunday around 5am eating breakfast then hopping on my vintage 1969 Honda 70
up to the contest site doing some MSK144 in the morn then noticed on the map
the EU stations getting closer thought I would give a listen on JT65 and low and behold this happened.

New DXCC
Mozambique C92ZO Friday
The contest got off to a good start on 15 with JA's some Hawaii,
China, Guam, Asiatic Russia, Malaysia. The band closed about 0100 UTC.
Then it was off to 40 meters with the coax hooked to one of the legs of the 55g
that is pretty flat swr wise but I have the LDG tuner just in case.
It seems to work well with just a 100 watts I'm able to get as far as the
Azores, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Canary Islands and Hawaii with this
configuration but being at 9000' doesn't hurt either. Hit the sack at 0600. Saturday
Got to the contest site about 1630 UTC and logged OK2D from the
Czech Republic on 15 with other EU stations working Zone 40 with
TF2CW which is probably the only station I'm going to hear from there.
HB9CA from Switzerland and then 3V8SS from Tunisia.
EU was short lived then it was off to the Carribian then at 1800 UTC
I switched to 10 meters and caught a new DXCC from Mozambique C92ZO.
ZD8W from Acension Isl. had a huge pileup going but I managed to get through
without too much effort. Back and forth from 10 to 15 all day then some weird
propagation around 2130 on 21 mhz getting a gaggle of Finland stations and
SM2M from Sweden then JA's appearing around 2200 closing out the day with
V6A from Micronesia, WL7F from Zone 1 and YE1K over in Indonesia. Sunday
I wasn't planning on starting until daylight but my anxiety got the best of me
so I went back up to the contest site to try out that 40' tower again on 40
and from 0900 to 1300 I worked some XE, JA, and some Carribian stations
then at first light I was off to 15 meters for the EU pileups until 1800 then they
fizzled out so over to 10 running up and down trying to find someone I hadn't
worked before. My best score for CW this year was a lot of fun.

Had to set up two days before due to weather coming in and it rained for the whole contest plus winds of 50+. Right out of the gate I worked MW0ZZK which seemed a bit odd because EU had since gone away so maybe it was long path but none the confusing. The contest got off to a good start with only 35 qso's the first night into ZL,VK,JA,KH7 and 3D2KM for a treat ending at 01:45z. Saturday started at 13:21z to the usual Zone 33 bunch and very few EU stations due to the hoards of stateside contesters taking up every inch of the band so just a handful of EU's. Mainly S&P but a highlight working C37NL in tiny Andorra for a new DXCC. I tried to run and got mostly the East coast needing UT and as the day ended a few more from down under some JA's 5W1SA,YB2ECG and 9W6IVY for another treat. Sunday was game day starting at 13:38z with a few Zone 14 guys then I broke a pretty hefty pileup to get ZD8RH which was nice to know the elevation here helps then a few more EU stations till 16:00z then it was on to the stateside grind until the JA's arrived at 21:00z with a strange call from OH3SR in Finland and another from LA7JO from Norway almost an hour later. I thought that someone was pulling my leg but stranger things have happened here at 9000' with the propagation. Nice little JA run with DU3LA as an added treat and ending with a few frantic stations needing 03 UT and final DX from VP9I to make for a nice but ear ringing contest. de K7ULS

I was planning on using two 2m12's for EME as 6 has been
dead as of recent so before the contest I worked a couple
of new 2 meter EME stations but 2 hours before the contest
something happened up on the tower with the phasing harness
and the SWR went sky high so down they came to remove one of the
antennas. I put it all back up in the nick of time only to work 6
stations the first day via meteor scatter so I really could have
taken my time to fix the problem but oh well. Woke up Sunday to work
a few more on MS then six opened around 15:00z for E's and didn't
stop till contest end which really brought up my morale from the previous day.
Nice runs for a contest this late in the season with double hop to MD and FL
also DX to VE7,VA7,VA3,VE4 and XE2. Thanks to the radio Gods for the wonderful

50 qso's in the first three hours Friday night into TX,CA,VK,R0 and JA. Woke up
to some EU but didn't last long then 600 q's Saturday from all over the US.
Right before it got dark I worked the East coast and Japan at the same time so
glad I had the vertical or I would have missed a few. Sunday EU in morning
then a slug to get 200 more. All in all not bad for a vertical. So ends another
contest season at the mountain.

the June contest has been in the past but
still a few highlights working W0KVA on 432 SSB out to 440 miles and no visits from Murphy.

brief E's on Sun with the majority of
qso's generated from meteor scatter.
The highlight was before the contest
even started working RK3FG off the
moon with just 250w from a Mirage B-320-G
with a single M2-2M12 at moonrise.
He had me at -28.
The only difference from this contest

2010 June Vhf Contest M2-2M12,50-5S,432-9WL I had to deal with snow
and 60 mph winds but had a blast and a fierce battle with N5LZ in the lower
valley. I think for 2011 I will invest in a contest voice keyer to save my
voice I could hardly talk by Sunday. I didn't take first place in Utah which
was left to N5LZ (87,552 512/171) setting a new Utah record but a close
second was my (79,947 413/189) with a win on 144 with a 2 meter E's opening to
OK, KS, WI, MI and IN. Now I know how exciting a 2 meter E's opening can be.

2009 June Vhf Contest M2-2M7,50-5S and M2-432SS. This was my first
major contest and I really learned alot having had the antenna hit by lightning
the first day shook things up a bit but luckily I knew it was coming and had
everything unhooked. There was one other guy on a mountain (Monte Cristo) to
my East Chris (KB7EEG) that was operating from a tent and had a time with the
lightning. I had PolyPhazers on all the incoming coax to a ground rod but
didn't want to try them out with my brand new FT-897D. Final Score (38,642) for
1st place Utah 50,144 mhz.
