I met Kim while operating 80 meter CW in 1961. We both were in our
last year of high school, had started in ham radio about a year before,
and taking similar classes preparing for college. Kim lived in Edmonton
Alberta Canada and myself in San Jose California. We had a lot in common.
For about a year we kept a CW schedule almost nightly on 80 m CW. After
high school Kim attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton majoring in
physics. I attended San Jose State College also majoring in physics.
Our studies did not allow time to continue the CW schedule but we did
maintain written correspondence for the next four years along with an occasional
CW contact. Only one time did we make a voice contact and I think one
phone call. Nearing graduation in 1966 we started hunting for graduate
schools. As part of this process we took the Advanced Physics Exam section
of the Graduate Record Exam as required by most graduate school physics departments.
Kim wrote a perfect exam with a score of 800 out of a possible 800.
Only a few people do this each year. ALL the major universities
including MIT, Princeton and California Institute of Technology made Kim
offers. Kim accepted the offer from Cal Tech in Pasadena California.
Kim and his friend Bill came to San Jose for our one and only visit in September
1966 on his way to Southern California. Kim returned to Edmonton for
a visit at Easter 1967. While returning to Edmonton from a ski trip
at Banff he was hit in his VW by a drunk driver and killed. I learned
this when a letter I had written was returned with a note from Cal Tech.
Kim's death was a tremendous loss. He was a brilliant person and a
great friend. We had corresponded for six years by CW and letter. To
this day I often wonder just how much he would have contributed to this world
both professionally and personally. The drunk driver took away a great
person that day in 1967 near Edson Alberta.
