The Nevada Bad Boys

IN THE BEGINNING.....
There was one Nevada Bad Boy. He did not know he was "BAD" until one day thought it would be neat to see just how far 2 meters would go simplex. This future "BAD BOY" got together with a group of other Amateur Radio Operators around February or March of 1997. None of them wanted to become dependent on hilltop repeaters, so they all started communicating simplex, and chose the frequency of 146.415 MHz within the 2 meter band. Soon, these operators were using the 2 meter band to communicate simplex up to 40 miles in distance. Who were these operators?

N7IOD - Al, Who is Now the Club President
WA6DDF - Joe, Who is the Technical Advisor for the club
AND
W7STM - Scott or "Scooter" Bad Boy Vice President

"WORLD FAMOUS" AA7AO - Wayne, joined the group and put up a 2 meter beam so he could join in on the fun. The group joked about being the FOUR MUSKETEERS! Wayne (AA7AO) was able to work Al - N7IOD, from the southside of Carson City while Al was at his home QTH in Sparks Nevada. Now keep in mind, there are alot of mountains in between Carson City, Nevada and Sparks Nevada. This communication alone, was well over 40 miles! "World Famous" AA7AO was able to maintain a strong 5/9 signal with Al (N7IOD) in Sparks, and the same was true for Al....5/9 all the way! Al said Wayne sounded so good on his end, he sounded "BAD"!

Three more hams joined the club, and they became the "Magnificent Seven". Five more hams joined and they called themselves the "Dirty Dozen". The hams were doing more, and more antenna work trying to avoid using repeaters for local communications. Many of the Bad Boys work the Cushcraft 13 element Boomer antenna on the vertical side. This antenna seems to provide the gain, and focus to aim your signal to the receiving party. Since the time of the "Dirty Dozen" more hams have joined the club, and we now call ourselves "THE NEVADA BAD BOYS". We applied for a club call, and received K7NBB. The group is now at a total of 44 hams. We have completed out first field day event, and did not do to shabby for our first attempt. There are photo pages of the past field day posted on this website, all you have to do is follow the links.

So....It is true, the Nevada Bad Boys were formed purely by accident! No one person at the beginning said "Lets form the Bad Boys!" It just seemed to happen, and then grow. And as far as I know, it is still growing. Since the completion of the 1998 field day activities, members of the group are still hard at work, planning the 1999 field day. The site is confirmed, and we are all hard at work planning and mapping out the site.
