What is Linux?
There are many different versions of it, called distributions. They all have their differences, but they are all Linux, and programs that work on one will work on any other.
You can download these distributions online for free, or you can buy a packaged version at the store. These packaged versions come with several CDs for the sytem itself and many applications, as well as manuals, and tech support service from the vendor.
The Linux you get from downloading online is the same Linux you get from the store.
There are many ways to get support from the community, such as user groups, usenet, web sites, and chatrooms.
Because Linux is open source, it can be distributed by more than one company.
