QRP-L Summer FOX Hunt Audio Clips

These audio clips were taken from the 20 Meter Summer 2002 QRP-L FOX Hunt. All of the stations recorded were using 5 watts of power or less (ie. QRP). If you'd like more information on the FOX Hunt check:  QRP-L Fox Hunt Home Page

This clip was recorded from my home QTH in Burbank, CA. Alan N3BJ was very strong from Bent Mountain, VA. He peaked at well over S9 near the end of the evening (~3:50 UTC). This recording was made using my FT-817 into my desktop PC. I was receiving Alan on 14.055 MHz, with the 500 Hz CW filter active. The antenna was nothing special, just my Center Fed Zep (~100' in length) hung as an Inverted Vee up about 40' in the center fed with 450 Ohm window line tuned with a Johnson KW Matchbox.

These clips were recorded from the home QTH with the usual suspect gear. The first clip is Doc K0EVZ just pounding out CW at lightning speeds weeding out a pack of hounds from Bismarck, ND. It was recorded at 02:13 UTC on 14.059 MHz. The next clip is Jim N0UR on 14.055 MHz looking for hounds at 02:43 UTC from Brooklyn Park, MN. The last clip is Doc K0EVZ looking for hounds at a slower pace around 03:00 UTC on 14.059 MHz.

Same gear as usual tonight and at the home QTH. Tonight was kind of a rough night to record the FOXII, as there was a lot of QRN. I did manage to get a pretty good recording of Alan N3BJ. This is Alan's second time out as the FOX from Bent Mountain, VA. He was working Todd AG0T in Minot, ND. Both stations sounded great here despite the noisy conditions and were very easy copy. The FT-817 was tuned to 14.055 MHz and the CW filter was not active. Sorry, didn't write down the exact time, but it was around 03:00 UTC.

Tonight was kind of a strange night for propagation. Signals were up and down. I got started kind of late tonight, and didn't turn the radio on until 03:00 UTC. Al K0FRP was very strong from Aurora, CO, and it only took 1 try to get him! This recording was taken at 03:45 UTC. Right after the recording, Al dropped down to nothing, so it was either the band or Al turned his beam, Hi! Jim N0UR was up and down tonight from Brooklyn Park, MN, as 20 meters was not cooperating. He was probably stronger earlier in the evening. I was able to get through after a couple of tries. Was a good night for hunting!

Another lousy night for propagation. Only 1 FOX, Marshall (ET) N1FN, was heard and worked tonight. Marshall's signal from Denver, CO was up and down. It'd pop up for a couple of minutes and then drop back down into the noise. I recorded him on 14.061 MHz at about 03:15 UTC.

Got a real good clip early tonight (about 03:10 UTC) of Doc K0EVZ in Bismarck, ND weeding Ken K3IU in RI out of the pack. Listen to that cacophony of CW!!! Doc it's no wonder that your ears were ringing! Doc was very strong all night tonight and was peaking at over S9 by the end of the night. Doc was on 14.055 MHz. Was another 1 FOX night though. Just couldn't pull Rod in. Maybe we'll have better propagation next week.

Only one FOXII heard here tonight, Dennis N4DD in Blountville, TN. Dennis was quite strong when I worked him earlier in the evening, but by the time I got the stuff hooked up to tape him the band had changed a bit and he was a bit down in signal, but still workable. I also got a real good clip of Tom N1TP chasing the FOX from Naples, FL.

Yippie!!! Another 2 FOXII night tonight! Paul K4FB in Highland City, FL and Doc K0EVZ in Bismarck, ND both had great signals into Burbank, CA tonight. This marks the end of the Summer FOX Hunt, and it's been a lot of fun. Can't wait until the Winter 40 Meter FOX Hunt starts. Thanks to all of the FOXII for makin' it a fun event!
