Ham Radio at the BSA Rendezvous '98

The following is a general overview of the K6BSA operation. For more details see the listing of "Frequently Asked Questions", below.

K6BSA will be in operation 4 to 6 hours a day throughout the time that the Scouts will be at the Rendezvous '98 encampment: July 26 through August 1, 1998.

The K6BSA station operation is like Field Day. We expect to rack up 1,000 contacts during the event, with occasional pile-ups when the station gets on the air. Band conditions should have improved by summer of 1998; we hope to finish Worked All States (WAS) during the week, and contact over 100 foreign countries, including all the countries represented by the Scouts at our Rendezvous '98.

The K6BSA station will have two HF operating positions for general operation on the bands between 40 and 10 meters. While most operation will be on voice (SSB) on or near the established Scout JOTA frequencies, there may be some CW operation by Scout Novices and our Station Staff at night (PDT). Our "Special Modes" area may include a digital station, and satellite capability, as well as RTTY / AMTOR / PACTOR digital operation, depending on loaned equipment.

There will be a packet BBS for incoming and outgoing traffic. We also expect to have daily nets on a local Sonora or Twain Harte repeater. There should also be daily news reports about events at the encampment that will be posted on this website.

On-site licensed Scouts and Scouters will have a chance to operate the K6BSA station, with Scout hams having priority during the day. Schedules can be arranged to talk to a station or troop back home; our Scouts would enjoy talking to your Troop's Scouts.

We hope that all Scouts at Rendezvous '98 will have a chance to send a message home through the amateur radio traffic network.

We hope to "hear" from you at Rendezvous '98!
