My Early Days of DXing

It is funny how those call signs like ZL1APM stick in your mind. Since that was my first DX contact back in 1956 on 15 meter CW, I never forgot it. I made a lot of friends around the world as a young man and am still in touch with them to this day; like W3HNK, K5MA, K5FUV, VE1ASJ (VE9DX) , and G3VOF.

Some of my On-the-Air friends are also still chasing DX!

Andy VE1ASJI had several visitors to my shack through the years but one of the most memorable was a visit in the late Sixties by Andy, VE1ASJ (now VE9DX.) Andy had just finished a tour of several years as radio operator aboard a research vessel and was touring the USA, visiting all the hams he had become acquainted with from HP9FC/mm. Andy bought a new Ford Mustang and stopped in Pine Bluff for a few day visit but as luck would have it, his new Ford blew a gasket and he ended up staying a week! I thought he would never leave! I didn't have any idea he would like Southern Cooking so much but he took to the Corn bread and Purple Hull peas like a real Southerner. Andy is no longer on the air but we are still in touch by e-mail (ve9dx@nbnet.nb.ca)

After many QSOs with Joe, W3HNK for 30 years, we finally met at Dayton in 1988

Another visit came from closer to home in 1970 from a teenage boy from Russelville, Ar., WA5VDH and his girlfriend. He had come down to visit and learn how to work DX! Unfortunately for me, he learned too fast, and even to this day I have to put up with his never ending BRAGGING! He later got one of those 4 letter calls and became K5UR. "All you have to do Boy, is LISTEN !" --That is what I told him! And Now, You Know The Rest Of The Story.
