The folllowing was attached to work request #507320 which was sent to
Facilities on May 18, 1999.
What's needed for a radio room?
- External location for antenna support structure (tower) needs to
be within about 100 feet of the radio room. Towers are usually
mounted on the ground but it is possible to mount them on a roof
with a bit more engineering work.
- The radio room should be relatively close to the tower base. A
pathway for routing cables between the radio room and the tower
base is required. In general, closer is better. Cable runs of up
to 100 feet are good. Longer runs are OK, but more expensive
cabling will be required.
- Good radio frequency and lightening protection earth ground.
Bonding to the earth ground around most of our buildings should
suffice.
- 110 Volt and 220 volt service sufficient for:
Equipment
| Electrical Supply
| Dissipated Heat
|
Computer | 300 watts | 300 watts
|
Monitor | 200 watts | 200 watts
|
HF Transceiver | | 100/2 watts

HF power supply | 250 watts | 50 watts
|
VHF Transceiver | | 50/2 watts

HF Amplifier | 3000 watts 220 VAC | 1500/2 watts

VHF power supply | 125 watts | 25 watts

Lamps 2@60W | 120 watts | 120 watts

People (3@180W???) | | 540 watts

TOTAL | 3995 watts | 2060 watts

- Air conditioning sufficient for above (note that I've halved the
power dissipated by the radios because they will almost never
exceed a 50% duty cycle for transmitting).
- Phone lines, data lines and phone
- Furniture (2 tables, 3 chairs, one bookshelf)
- Must be able to secure the room to prevent equipment from walking
off.
Considerations for where to put a radio room:
- Building 1 could be a good location if we can place a tower on the
south side of the building. (I didn't get back there to see if
this was possible.)
- We've been told that Building 2 has no space, but the back of
building 2 (the east side (nope, the southwest side 99-07-19)) might provide a good place for a tower
(it's out of the way and has a fence around it).
- Building 3 is not a candidate due to close proximity to the test
floor and sensitive equipment in the device analysis lab.
- Building 3B might work, but I've got no idea of what the future
holds for that building. If we used building 3B, we could put the
tower out in the empty field south and west of the building. This
should get it far enough away from Building 3.
- Building 4 (the admin building next to fab 25) has
no "backside" where a tower could be safely placed and I
understand the roofing material won't tolerate an antenna.
Probably not a good choice.
- Fab 25 - I have no idea what might or might not be possible here.
- Building 312 already has a tower in place, but AMD does not own
the building. This brings up the question of moving everything when
the lease expires. I'd rather not go through this exercise twice!
- Support buildings. There are several buildings that I don't know
the names of that contain
support equipment for the main buildings. If there is accessible
space that meets our other requirements in one of these buildings,
it would also work for us.
