I became a ham during the of 1998. I owe this hobby to the influence from my friend Damon Keys (K4DRK). He and I main use it for communication while during the field. Either caving or hiking and he uses it for rescue work which he volunteers some of his time towards. I figured that Amateur Radio might give me more incites on radio work and a really works and some real world example of communications. I haven't been able to really get involved yet due to the demands of college and part-time work. I enjoy the usefulness of ht and mobile units. I am the proud purchaser of a YaesuVX-5R.
The Tri-States Amateur Radio Club of Northwest Georgia is out local amateur radio club for Catoosa, Dade, and Walker counties of Georgia. The Chattanooga area also has an amateur radio club however I do not know what the web address is a the present. I encourage anyone that is interested to contact one of the members of a club for more information on becoming a ham. Membership has it's privileges.
Here is a page with info on the PC programming cable for the Yaesu VX-5R and several other of their radios.
