Media Information
Virginia's New Point Comfort Lighthouse is not unlike North Carolina's Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, with regard to the
challenges it faces. Now completely surrounded by water and protected from
falling into the Chesapeake Bay only by rip rap, the team of amateur radio
operators welcomes the media to join them on the island in a concerted effort to
bring public attention to this local treasure.
Constrained by tides, the team will depart for the
island at 8:00 a.m on Friday, August 17 and will spend several hours setting up
towers and equipment before becoming operational by 8:00 p.m. that evening.
The team has made arrangements for the media to be
transported via boat to the island adjacent to the lighthouse to cover the event
on Saturday, August 18, 2001. Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. a boat will depart
for the island, on which the media and local representatives are welcome.
Please contact Parke
Slater, event Logistics Coordinator for details, directions and
reservations. The travel time to the departure site from Richmond is
approximately one hour, forty-five minutes.
