MMMM...delicious ham radio...

I operate amateur radio station K4DOH from my home on Monte Sano just east of downtown Huntsville, Alabama USA. At 1604 feet above sea level, this location is ideal for communications. I hold a General Class license.

Equipment

MFJ switching power supply, Alinco DX-70TH transceiver, SGC-237 Antenna Coupler, vertical whip.

Also mobile with an Icom 2100 2-meter FM rig to an MFJ 6/2-meter mag mount antenna.

PSK31 de K4DOH

I'm on the air with PSK31 on all HF bands. My primary Windows software is the excellent open-source WinPSKse 2.21 by Wheatley, AE4JY, and extended by Dave Knight, KA1DT. Under Linux, I am testing several promising programs, especially LinPSK. Station power output in psk31 mode is 50 watts, less if conditions will bear. Update March 2002: Much less these days as I have been abducted into the the QRP cult, at least for a while. Five watts goes a long way on PSK31. Update December 2002: Success with kpsk on my laptop under Linux! (Tosh 2805, running Mandrake 9.0, KDE and/or Gnome and/or IceWM - nice.)

QSL info

I QSL electronically. Go to the eQSL web site if you have contacted me recently. Give me about two weeks between online logbook updates.

Where Am I?

Well glad you asked, Mr. Ashcroft. I'm APRS mobile these with a Kenwood D-700.

Several APRS servers exist on the World Wide Web. Try using one of these links for my current location, providing I'm in range and it's on.

I'm promoting APRS for use in weather spotting. It saves time and provides accurate position reports for SKYWARN operations.

And now a dystopian mini-rant. This technology is especially subject to "mission creep." Today's option may be tomorrow's requirement. "You don't WANT to be tracked? You have something to hide, terrorsymp?" One of these days I may be nostalgic for the OFF switch on my APRS tracking device.

Other Activities

I do some severe storm spotting. That does NOT mean I chase tornadoes. But if they come my way, I'll report them. The local SKYWARN net is well-trained and responsive.

I'm also assisting Project HALO . This is an effort to launch small rockets into space from balloons. Launching at high altitude pays off big time in higher rocket motor efficiency. It's not for huge payloads, but it has promise. The Project HALO team currently holds the altitude record at 36 miles. The ultimate goal is beyond sixty miles, into "space" as defined by several international agencies. I'm helping out with the ranging and telemetry for future flights. Amateur frequencies in 2m, 70cm, and 23cm bands are used for uplink and downlinks.

Did I mention that I do NOT chase tornadoes?

The Suspicious Call Sign

Yes, it's a vanity call sign, honoring the patriarch of Our Favorite Family. I was N4DCT until January 1999, and WN4YIQ during an otherwise normal childhood.
