I got my first ticket as WN8MOY in 1964 at the age of 16
in Youngstown, Ohio. After being a Novice for 5 months I got my General
and became WA8MOY. I remained a General until 1978 when I got my Extra
and became AF8U. In 1993 I moved to Tennessee and when the Vanity Call
system started I received my current call, K4BX. My current interest is
QRP (low power operating). For the past 6 months I've been running the shack on a HUGE UPS type battery that is kept charged with a small solar panel.. My solar panel is a UniSolar US42 which measures about 30x36 inches and is supposed to put out a peak of 2.5 amps into the battery. Right now I am just using a K2 and a Kenwood TM261 with the battery power. I plan to add a small 12v lamp if I can find one. In July 2001 I had a nearby lightning strike and lost my K2, a cable modem, my solar charge controller, and strangely a soundcard in the radio computer. The K2 was sent back to be looked at and luckily it just needed the computer (PIC) chips replaced.
