HAM  SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH - MARCH 2000

PAUL BURCHAM, KD4ZAO

SHACK SHOT....       At the left is one of our most active hams, Paul Burcham, KD4ZAO.  You can find Paul on the repeater almost any time, at least monitoring, and he has come to the rescue many times when someone needed a phone call to the XYL to help keep them out of trouble for being late in getting home, or when someone has spotted a traffic problem or situation that needed to be reported.
Paul has been a ham since December 18, 1996, and has been retired from the Hazard City Police Department for several years.  His wife Jessie works at the Hazard Community College, and plans to join him in retirement soon.
Paul joined in the hobby of Public Service Scanning several years ago, with his good friend Asbel Johnson, KE4FAC, and it was natural that they both got licensed to enjoy the great hobby of amateur radio.  It is rumored that Ab has retired from UPS, and although I’ve noticed a decline in their service lately, I don’t seem to hear Ab on the radio much!!
When is the OM not the Chief Op??  Well, in Paul’s case, it’s when the main op, Ben, is around.  And that’s about all the time.  When you pass Paul in his jeep, there’s Ben in the other seat, taking care of business
and watching the road.  Some of Paul’s friends claim Ben is driving half the time.  It’s also claimed he knows every voice on the radio, but it hasn’t been tested.
Paul and Ben enjoy other hobbies such as using the computer, which Paul has recently added a scanner to,  surfing the net with the computer or a WebTV, and generally bumming around together. Paul has suffered from some poor health in recent years, and doesn’t get to attend as many club meetings as he would like to.  We sure all enjoy talking to him on the air though.
That great sense of humor Paul has keeps us all going sometimes.  You can usually hear Joe, KE4WWY checking on him about every day, and Ben sure likes to go to Walmart, it seems.  Oh, yeah, that's Ben on the right........
