CW was my "first love" in amateur radio.  When I was first licensed in 1961, as a kid just going into High School, I was not in any financial position to purchase even a fully assembled rig or a kit.  It was financially "well over my head" to do so.  In relation to income, everything was very, very expensive, from the simple vacuum tubes to -- especially -- the modulation and power supply transformers.

Hence, CW was the only really practical way to go. Then, grandually, I went to "screen grid modulation" as my first attempt at "phone" with almost 30 watts plate-input power.
