Amateur Radio can be found on over 25 different frequency allocations or bands. Most local communication takes place on the VHF and UHF bands, with the most popular being the 2 meter band (144.0 MHz through 148.0 MHz). Most long range communication can be found on the HF bands which are located between 1800 kHz and 29,700 kHz. The allocation of these bands includes portions for voice (phone), Morse code (CW), and digital (RTTY, PSK) modes of operation. In addition, portions of most of the HF bands are reserved for advanced license classes which give ham radio license holders an incentive to upgrade to the higher classes. Keeping track of all of this information is not a simple task, and therefore, most of us have charts hanging on the wall of our "shack" with a graphic representation of the band plans. One of the most popular charts was published by Icom. To view or download a copy of this great band plan chart, click here.
