Troop 91

Radio Merit Badge 2002

Twenty members of Boy Scout Troop 91, from Prairie Village, Kansas, earned Radio Merit Badge during summer camp at the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation near Osceola, Missouri. In addition to learning the basics of amateur radio, some of the Scouts participated in the annual Field Day Contest, a nationwide amateur radio event during which several thousand radio clubs take to the outdoors to test their emergency preparedness. The Scouts, together with their merit badge counselor, Bill Henderson (amateur radio operator K0VBU), contacted 150 different stations during the weekend contest, using both voice and morse code. Then, for the next five days, all the Scouts in the merit badge class had the opportunity to make contact with radio amateurs around the country and around the world.
